Is the prop shaft to the rear wheels fitted or has it been removed by a previous owner? - Mike

What year is the car?

More than likely the angle gear / viscous coupling have failed.

The AWD system on the early cars isn't monitored by any sensors, so there will be no lights or indications of a failure - other than the obvious - no drive to the rear axle.
