Default Engine surging and then stalling

Please forgive my naivity on this subject....
I'm a proud ownder of a S70 2.5 SE Auto (1999)...however I took her in for a service (Non Volvo specialist) and since she came back the following has happened 3 times now.
I notice that the car begins to feel as though its about to run out of petrol ( and I never let it go below a quarter of a tank). at which point when i put my foot on the accelorator tha car starts to lurch, and then make out as if its going to stall. If I don't pull over very soon, the car will stall...and its an auto.
After a couple of hours cooling down it starts and runs fine.
I have checked the air hoses as someone said that could be a possibility (air leak)...now heres a big one....the aluminium hosing that seems to come from the air filter box to the inlet (big pipe sticking out at a 90 degree angle right ways out of the back of the engine???...) and that has split. Now heres the confusing part because a couple of people said that that wouldn't matter and i should just pull the tube out and throw it away...

Please someone help me.....
Many thanks in advance.

That big aluminium hose draws warm air from around the exhaust, and really only matters on very cold days, so what you've been told about ditching it is pretty much OK. It wouldn't cause your symptoms.

What you're describing could be a leaky vacuum hose, or a faulty fuel pump or relay, or a failing coil pack, or the beginning of the end of the ETM. These latter two only apply if it's an ETM car.

Who did the service, and what exactly did they do?

Cheers

Jack
