Hi all am new and looking for some words of wisdom
Hi all I buying an xc90 very soon as I've just had a new baby and could do with some extra room and more seats are a nice plus.
But I've not had a Volvo before but I'm really liking the xc90 needs to be auto Diesel with as many toys as possible, I don't have much in the way of a budget around £5000 also, I've seen I fair a mount around with over 100k on the clock. I have a ok to good knowledge on cars. But I've heard that the auto gearbox can be a problem what should I look out for? Is there any other things I should be looking for? Any years/models in particular that good/not do good. Many thanks in advance David |

As far as I can tell most of them are diesels and auto.
The "problem" with the gearboxs stems froms volvos claim that they are sealed for life and never need an oil change, quite true if youre happy to replace a gearbox every few years. Change the gearbox oil when youve got it home its diy. dont let some chavvy dealer do it in case he uses the wrong fluid. There are bargains to be had if you find a car where gears are playing up, changes harsh etc, take a punt could just need new fluid. Plenty of how-to threads on here. Plenty of faulty cars on evilbuy to choose from !

Also do a search in the XC90 general areas, all your questions are likely to have been answered already several times over. Hope it helps

Assuming your going for a d5 you will be mainly looking at autos. Manuals are quite rare but there are some.
Yes the gearboxes are the weak point, in general there was a 4 speed GM box that was in the petrol t6 model (don't think they can handle the power so avoid) there is a 5 speed and 6 speed auto Asin Warner box. I would go for the 6 speed. Its actually not a bad box the prob is that volvo doesn't service them on the service plan where other makes of cars using the same box do, and therefor the oil get burned and things start to go wrong. In my experience i would assume that you are going to get the box reconditioned. If you accept this fact like i did then look for a good condition car with good engine service history that is being sold with a box needing recondition and pay the appropriate price. I.e 2-3k less than book price. E I bought a massive milage 230k 2005 reg d5 being sold cheap needing its box done. I paid the right price and then immediately got the box rebuilt, which cost the 2.2k and came with a 10 year warranty. so all in all in now have a car with a box i totally trust and is warranted. it was a 1 owner car and was used for business use (so interior had little wear) don't get a farmers wife abused one and don't get one that has been full of kids trashing the interior. as for milage i don't care, the cars are solid and many people would think mine had only done 100k if not less, so providing its been serviced well its ok. finally if your looking for a volvo i would seriously look at slr motors based in warrington. He's a volvo fanatic and gets trade in direct from volvo, only has a few cars at once and you might need to wait for the right one. He's on Facebook and most prob this forum. Also make sure the foot operated foot break works, a lot of people don't use them and they seize. Make sure it holds and if it does and you buy the car make sure you use it to avoid it seizing. hope that helps |
