Volvo 244DL upgrades.
Hi All,
I have a 1978 244DL in very good order. It just went through its MOT and all I had to replace was one tyre. However it is quite basic (not much to go wrong then) and I would like to add power steering and central locking. My wife drives it and finds it heavy to park and being used to central locking finds it hard to do with out it now. Are these easy upgrades and if so does any one know just what is needed from the scrapyard for each job. What sort of money are we talking about. Cheers.

RE: Volvo 244DL upgrades.
Money not much, provided you find a good yard and not those people who charge a percentage of the new part price.
PAS: Need puump, bracket, belts and rack Fairly simple job Central locking: Need four motors and one actuator. Motors in each door apart from driver and boot lid/tailgate and actuator in driver door. Mounting is not hard, have to pull some wires though and add a relay. For maybe 50-60 quid you can add a remote unit. Microscan has one that is just a remote locking, not an alarm. If you want this, get five motors and put one in driver door. RE: Volvo 244DL upgrades.
Thanks George for your help and advice. I'll see what I can find in the scrap yard this weekend.
However I have just returned from a 245 mile round trip to see a 1988 240 estate that was advertised for sale. A full MOT, taxed untill June, new tyres fitted with 140,000 miles on the clock. Well, it had 190,000 odd miles on it and it showed every one of them. New tyres were fitted at least 20,000 miles ago and only the front two matched with different sizes being fitted on the rear. How it had a MOT I don't know as the sills were holed quite badly in places. The so called good tailgate had as described only the one hole in it, unfortunately it was from one side to the other along the bottom edge. It turned out that the seller was a dealer who took it in as a part exchange and he used all the dealer tricks to get me there to look at it. We left him in no doubt that what he was selling was a piece of junk and left. I will keep looking. Cheers.

Is getting one from the Republic an option or is that too much hazzle to import?

RE: Volvo 244DL upgrades.
Far too much trouble and cost. It's easier for a car to go south than for it to come north.

So much for the free movement of goods.
