The DLR uses a similar Thales Seltrac control and signalling system to the Northern and Jubilee lines (and is currently being installed on the sub-surface lines), it's just the person in charge of the train is standing by the doors rather than sitting in the cab at the front. They still have to be able to drive the train, and comply with all the other safety requirements that a tube driver does.
This is about as far as you can go with automation on the underground. The safety rules for trains operating in a tunnel, either require a member of staff on board, or the tunnels have to have protected walkways and evacuation routes, which would be impossible to install in the existing tunnels on the underground.
There is unlikely to be the money to do any of this in the near future, as the
Mayor is claiming the situation is so dire that that they may need to close a whole tube line. I guess we'll find out tomorrow if the government is going to call his bluff...
