Default Wrong Fuel

I have posted this on the V70/XC70 page but I guess I would get a better response on this page.

Our son has just filled up our 2006 XC70 D5 with petrol by mistake. Unfortunately, he only realised when it started spluttering and died.
Car has been recovered is now being drained as we speak.
I know this is not good, are we looking at fuel pump, injectors damage or is there a chance we could get away with it with fresh fuel.
Appreciate the tight tolerances on the pump etc, but I guess I am really asking has anyone on here been in a similar situation and what was the outcome?
