Default 'Book time for maintenance...'

Several days ago, and every day since, the car has been reminding me that a service is due.
Reluctantly, I have bowed to domestic pressure and booked it into our local Volvo indie for a selective service. It had full service with them last July which included replacing oil, air, cabin and fuel filters. It's only done around 4000 miles since then, so this year only the engine oil and filter will be changed, plus a general health check of all it's vital organs.
The garage queried the auxiliary belt age, and it was last changed before our ownership at around 86000 miles in May 2016. The car is now sitting on 121000 miles. Given the 10-year/54000 mile rule, in theory it's not due again until around 140000 or May 2026. The garage thought it might be prudent to check it and change it if it looks cracked or worse for wear. I'm aware of the risk of the aux belt letting go and debris from it causing cambelt to fail, but a bit premature do you think?
The cam belt was changed in May 2018 at about 95000 miles so should be good for a while yet.

Prudent folk fit two aux belts for every one cam belt on a D5.

So that'd be a cam belt every 10 years, aux every 5 at typical mileage.

Considering how little it costs there's not much of an argument against being prudent,

The book time for service message comes on a month before the service is due to give time to book one. It will remind you again when the actual service needs doing and also when its overdue.

As I have a V70 with a broken aux belt in my "to fix" pile, I would probably even change the aux belts a year earlier than that just to be sure.

The cost to repair the aftermath is more than 100 times the price of a belt

Fair enough. I've been quoted about £83 for the aux belt and tensioner plus about £5 postage which doesn't sound too bad for the genuine Volvo parts. Not sure whether to have a go at it myself - I no longer have access to a torque wrench and would need to buy a T60 Torx bit. I'd also have to overcome 'er indoors preferring that I did something else.

Just for clarity, I don't in the least mind spending money to keep the car in shape. I was just querying why the aux belt would be called into question when in theory it should have plenty of life left in it. Keeping 2 cars on the road while on a pension means I do have to question these things. I'll probably get the service done first and see what that throws up. If nothing major gets highlighted then I can follow it up with the aux belt and tensioner. Helps spread the cost.
