Default MOT Glee…

Hi all,
I was overjoyed today to find my petrol 940 sailed through its MOT, requiring only a pair of wiper blades! A rear number plate bulb was an advisory also, so I got the chaps at Class 4 in Yeovil (highly recommended garage and MOT centre, used them for my Mrs’ Galaxy this year too) to pop a bulb in, and Bob was the proverbial brother of yer mother.

I was relieved as had been chasing a rogue earth issue for the last few weeks which tripped the brake light bulb warning light on the dash whenever it rained, despite all brake lights working faultlessly. Eventually (ie this morning!) I replaced the Lucar connectors on both rear clusters which solved the problem at the last minute. Phew!

Onwards for another year…

Congrats on the pass Phil! Also on finding that rogue electrical problem - might also pay to pop the rear clusters out and drill a 3mm or 1/8" hole in the bottom of each as a drain hole to remove excess water so they don't fill up light colourful goldfish bowls and make the connections wet again.

I've seen the pictures of your car David so I think it will pass with flying colours

Congrats from here too. My 940 went in last month (passed), and I have a video showing the few advisories, which is nice. There's always the worry these days that something unexpected will pop up that requires difficult-to-find parts.

One of the advisories was that there was "a hole" in the exhaust just forward of the cat, which turned out to be the plug (for an additional O2 sensor?) in the downpipe beginning to come adrift. It subsequently fell out on my drive with only slight finger pressure, so I was lucky there.

The "extra" hole is for models that use a Lambda sensor in a different place. Sometimes driveability problems can occur with the Lambda in one place and be cured by moving it to another place. Usually the closer to the manifold, the better for response.

Replacement bungs are available on ebay for a couple of quid if it comes to it. Fit with a smear of copper grease and tighten to about the same as a spark plug - finger-tight plus ~3/4 turn is usually about right.

That's what I was hoping for -- just replace the bung -- but this doesn't seem to be a threaded thing, and there's no sign of a thread in the hole. A piece cut from the old exhaust and a jubilee clip then...

Fill the hole with weld and jobs done permanently, you don't even have to be a proficient welder to do it.

The OE downpipe on my B200F engine has that threaded collar. It was supplied with the “plug” screwed in. My car only has the one lambda sensor in the cat.
A pattern downpipe that I fitted many moons ago had the hole with no bung and no thread. I found something the right size to plug into the hole then fitted an exhaust clamp to make sure it didn’t come out.
