Nothing wild.Nothing hysterical.

Jump starting another car (correctly) (and even by a trained technician) can quite possibly cause electrical damage due to surging/spiking and other reasons despite vehicles inbuilt protective systems.Being reasonable it may not just be XC.So why take the risk?

Modern cars with the many varied computers can be damaged.Google it.

I would imagine you would be "wild" and "hysterical" if damage was caused to your 40 grand vehicle due to being jump started or giving a jump start.

Your choice to take the risk I suppose, just I would not recommend you do. Speaking from experience.

Fair point Wimorrison.

Same does apply to other vehicles as well.

You may probably be correct in expecting Volvo to sort the problem out although thing is would you wish to have to argue it out with Volvo (or any other manufacturer for that matter) when an issue has arisen with your vehicle after jump starting?

Years ago I killed the ignition control unit in my old 95' Volvo 850 when trying to jump start it from another car, a very expensive experience. I am an engineer with electronics as speciality and I did evverything according to the manual. It is likely that a spike reached my electronics when I connected the two batteries. Perhaps electronics in new cars have better spike filters but they also contain far more electronics and several expensive computers. If you need charging at home, it's safer to connect a battery charger and wait an hour or two before starting.

this may be why all the ecu's shut down when the battery goes fully flat. as i mentioned above after recharge, there's a reset procedure to follow.

short of changing the battery, a jump is the only way to get going in an auto after the battery goes flat.

You were incredibly unlucky to have this happen to you. I've jumped started dozens of cars over the years (former car dealer), and never once had problem. Maybe I've been very lucky. But I do make a point of ensuring that the connection points are clean and accessible before connecting up to minimise the chances of sparks, which could cause surges, or ignite the hydrogen coming off the battery.

People claim that jump starting cars will cause all the air bags explode - sounds like one for MythBusters to me.
