Default UPDATE oil from the transfer box!

Hi all,

the transfer box is leaking oil, but not through the seals to the driveshafts, or from the filler plug.

Apparently the transfer box is manufactured in two halves, (for ease of assembly I was told) the leak is coming from the join where the two halves meet. The leak has probably been there for a very long time. As the oil loss is very very slight, although the level was very low!

The warranty for this part only covers the unit against "mechanical breakdown" so oil leak is not covered. (Yeah, I saw that one coming).

The temptation would be to let the unit to continue to leak oil until it does in fact "breakdown" and seize, then Volvo would cough up for a new transfer box and driveshafts and propshaft and any other major items damaged mega ££££! But I could not do that, as tempting as it seems financially.

There is a chance that a transmission specialist may be able to make a repair (there are 2 such company's in the UK that specialise in repairing Volvo transmissions, luckily one is based not to far from me so I will let you know the outcome, fingers crossed.

Thanks for all the input guys!

Default RE: UPDATE oil from the transfer box!

bad news howard ;(

how about disconnecting the awd for the meantime until u get the box sorted??

i think you can do this by pulling a fuse although u will get a warning light on the dash its better than running the box dry!!!

just don't make full use of the rica or you'll shred the front tyres ;)
