temp sensor. gasket or not?
Hey guys does the temp sensor on the 850 have a gasket or not? the last one i had went straight up to running temp even when cold so thought it was broken, but could it be that it was just earthing on the head instead of the negative wire?

What i would say is, if your gauge goes straight up it needs replacing and as it dips into the head it probably needs a gasket.. Jod

Disconnect the cable from the temp sender and use the a digital voltmeter across the sender unit to measure the resistance, double check the value you get against the graphs below
The second graph is taken from the same data but zoomed in to the area of more interest, i.e the portion the car is often in when running including the points at which the radiator fan switches on at slow speed and high speed: If the engine is cold typically 20 Deg C then you are looking for around 2500 Ohms resistance - Mike |

I'm not technologically inclined in that area (blank face) so I'll just replace it and use some gasket paper. the only thing i don't get is it earth's through the thread regardless of a gasket. so would it be that sensor was just faulty? this is the quagmire i have been struck with since i replaced it two years ago.

There is no gasket, the sensor is two wire and not earthed to the engine.

On the two cars I have dealt with (M4.4 S70 and ME7 C70) they have both had a metal washer on the coolant temp sensor. Is the 850 different? Or are we talking about something completely different? Just to confirm - I'm not doubting the wiring arrangement.

I can't recall if its ever had a washer on mine but its always been water tight due to the thread pitch i would assume.

Depends what you mean by gasket I guess, to me this is a thing made of a paper type material.
A metal or plastic item is, to me, a seal. |
