Camshaft Front Seal Replacement
One of my 940s is due a timing belt change which I plan to do myself. I want to replace the cam seal at the same time since it is leaking onto the water pump gasket. I’m thinking of getting a generic seal removal and insertion kit to facilitate this. One question, how do you prevent the camshaft rotating whilst manipulating the seals? Especially inserting the new one if using the cam pulley bolt. Is there an obvious way (that currently escapes me) of locking the camshaft when the front pulley and timing belt are removed? Thanks.

Trust me it won't rotate, you would somehow have to have the strength to compress valve springs with your fingers to do that.
I just use a hook and work it in by the seal lip that sits against the camshaft and pull it out. Then when fitting the new seal put a little bit of clean oil on the edges and I mean a little bit. Then I tap the new seal in by placing the old seal over it and tapping it with a little toffee hammer, to get it all the way home you need to hit it quite hard in the end. I would recommend doing all of the front seals and the front crank housing gasket too, if the cam seal is leaking these will be too. Don't forget to slacken off the camshaft and auxilliary shaft pulley bolts while the cambelt is still on, I find it still tries to jump teeth so I push down on the cambelt on the run between the cam and aux pulleys. The same goes for when torquing them up, they try to jump teeth so press down on the belt and it stops it. Last edited by 360beast; Nov 8th, 2021 at 18:12. |

I found that wrapping the old timing belt around the pulley and clamping a 6" G clamp around the outside gave enough purchase and holding the handle of the G clamp had enough force to resist the spanner loosening the nut.
