Newbie with LPG V40

Have just got a volvo v40 2.0i 16v 193k with an old lpg system. Had some issues with jammed backfire arrester and vacuum pipes not connected but sorted them now. LPG runs fine until approaching a junction and then wants to stall. Anyone any ideas??

Is this a factory fit bi-fuel or an LPG conversion?

Initial thought would be a fuel pressure problem.

Dos the car run OK on petrol?

Have you checked over the ignition - plugs etc?

Has the LPG filter been changed recently, and has the system pressure been checked / adjusted?

It's a conversion, a BRC system, the car does look like it needs a good service so that's my first job. Where are the filters on the lpg system?

The filter will be an in-line filter somewehere close to the LPG pressure regulator/distributor.

It will probably be a small cylindrical canister, less than 50mm diameter and perhaps 50mm long.

It should be quite easy to locate, but possibly difficult to open.

Probably will have a removable paper element inside.

Not really had chance to service it yet but it backfired big style today and blew the intake pipe off the throttle body, checked the plugs when I got home and one looks like it's been dropped before being fitted ( centre electrode bent and ceramic insulation broken off on one side!!!) Would a backfire cause this??? The car does hesitate very ocassionally when on petrol.

it may not have cause it but i would be wary of broken plug in the bore as it will not do the engine any good as you say plug may have been dropped before but still fitted

Hi,
I don't know if You dealed with Your problem byt if You have problems with stalling engine on LPG first make sure spark plugs and spark plug leads are in really good condition (best buy spark plugs designet for lpg fed engines) - the spark must be really good because lpg have higher ignition temperature than petrol so if spark is poor quality (with old plugs/leads) it may caus some problems... Changing lpg filter may also help.

btw. by "old" LPG system You mean which generation? because first (and second) generation had two bolts - one regulating idle speed (it may be too low and engine stalls when suddenly drops rpm) and second to regulate how the mixture of lpg and air is rich so it's possible to regulate it easily!
