We have just driven 750 miles from home to SW France. Real mixture of horrendous traffic jams around Paris to cruise control set on 80 mph. Car tells me 33.3 mpg average but not checked it properly yet. I suspect that without the jams it would have been 35 ish.

Mine's a 05 163 auto and the best I've ever got is 33mpg on a 400 mile run south - mostly motorway at 70mph. Did the same trip again recently and got 31 at slightly increased 75ish. The tyres are at around 39psi. Interesting that others seem to get better - I was always under the impression that the later, more powerful, versions tended to use more fuel......

Yes, you're right with this, afaik the earlier 163bhp versions were more fuel efficient.

Seriously - I know the autos will sap the juice a bit more than the manuals. All I can suggest is check the tyre pressures. Mine does dip a bit after a service too though.

Well mine is a 54 plate D5 Auto with just on 198,000 up as of tonight, averaging 24.5 around town and 32-33 on a run - Is it safe to assume that ours is "run in" now?

At 118K miles my 04 plate D5 gets an average of 30-31mpg on mostly local (rural driving) and a whopping 34mpg on faster A roads.

What would be interesting would be to look at the average speed combined with an MPG value.

For me, average speed = 24mph, average MPG 30.8mpg.
When I do an average of 28mph the average MPG goes up to 34mpg.

The driving conditions/environment make a very big difference.

Yorkshire to mid France last week, 1100miles all in, and my '05 D5 with 105k on the clock averaged and indicated 44.2mpg.

Mostly motorway, cruising at around 65mph as know that going above this it drinks fuel.

On run down to the ferry in Portsmouth car indicated 47.1mpg, so very happy.

Interesting that some feel they need to thrash the car all the time. Don't get me wrong, I love speed and the thrill of driving and getting it all hooked up well in the corners, but on the 275mile trip to the ferry 5mph only gains about 18minutes! And tbh the ferry goes at a set time so planning a set off there is no panic. And in the big 90 it was quite nice just cruising all the way without the frantic lane changing and overtaking! (Or am I just getting old?!).

Mine is a 2005 55 with 93,000 it's one of the last 163/D5's and is an auto. I have a fairly new set of Goodyear Wranglers and have them at 40psi. Our overall accurate (full to full) average is 25.91mpg, we do a fair bit of town driving too. Went Exeter to Bristol earlier this week 170 miles round trip and sat at an indicated 75mph on the motorway (cruise on on the way back) and got a dash read of 40.1mph, although experience shows that the genuine figure will be 3-4mpg less. Still 36mpg not bad for the size and weight of the car.

Xc90 2010 185 Geartronic 23k miles 30 mpg over the last 3 months 6400 miles, 75% Motorway/Open road.
Best 40 mpg over 200miles at 60 mph on motorway.. driving like a saint ( hard work ) no aircon, no roof bars etc.
Worst 26 mpg 233 miles at xx mph on motorway..... definitely not a saint (nice!)

All brim to brim calculations

Consensus on the forum not yet run in!

The car loves to cruise and hates the urban jungle from the economy viewpoint .....Just about to remap will then answer my own question on improving mpg or not!
