Default Summer travels - what MPG

A few weeks ago, Ianu started this thread on MPG and tyre pressures, a very interesting read if you have a few mins.

http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...highlight=ianu

I've just done a 440 mile round trip from Harrogate to Potters Bar / Watford areas then back home up north averaging an indicated 38.7 mpg. This included stops on the way down and way back, plus a traffic jam near Doncaster, plus town driving whilst in the south east. On the way down the average showed 40.1 mpg before we hit local roads. I'll add that the car has no economy box or anything. I kept it to 65-70 mph.

I'm well chuffed, my old 1.6 Scenic only would manage about 42 on the same trip.

I put it down to following the tyre pressures on IANU thread, driving carefully and getting the 4 wheel laser alignment done. Speaking of the alignment, my urban MPG immediately increased by about 2-3 mpg. (I know these are all indicated figures but even so, I'm still happy)

So I thought I'd start this thread to see what journeys people had done and what MPG members' cars have achieved.

Thanks Mistero,
Just to let you all know - I'm still consistently getting between 45 - 47 on the display for the same journey ( I haven't re-checked my tyre pressures again yet)
As you've mention too - locally it is still over the 40 on the display.
In real terms doing a brim to brim calculation - this equates to between 35 - 40 mpg depending how far you try and brim it each time.

I'd be interested too to hear anyone who's doing any long haul on the continent what they get. My experience - fully loaded even with a roof box didn't have a great impact if you keep the speed sensible.
Keep us posted :-)

30 on mine. That's with 19" wheels though, bit of running about at ~40mph, motorway at 75-80.

@ Poisondart - exactly, the temptation from that engine is to go above 70mph but it kills the mpg down to your sort of figures.

People, you gotta fight that temptation!

(Ooh get me, all Marjorie Doors all of a sudden)

I know, I know!

But, man, I'm just waaaay too busy. If I sat at 65 I'd never get anywhere. And she is so smooth at speed, it's completely effortless.

And coming from a T6, 30mpg is better than 24mpg!

Plus it's kinda cool racing along in the R Design, esp with the quad stainless steel exhaust pipes sticking out the back!

Just back from Italy, plenty of 100+ mph sprints and Rotterdam to Rome in 2 jumps (silly speeds for hours at a time ... average MPG over the 4300 miles (in 16 days) ... 36.1 MPG, that was with 4 up, luggage for 6 and air-con on all the way, plus 120 bottles of wine on the way home.

Not bad at all

should add MPG worked out manually with brim to brim fill ups ....

Must admit I checked the fuel receipts and the calculations several times, well chuffed, defo as the miles go up the fuel consumption on long trips goes down.

4300 miles on 8 tanks of diesel (inc that Agip crap TBH try and avoid IMO) brilliant result.

Be patient - give it another 100k :-).
Seriously - I know the autos will sap the juice a bit more than the manuals. All I can suggest is check the tyre pressures. Mine does dip a bit after a service too though.

Cheers
