Also is it AWD and auto?

I assume some of it is the new 8 speed auto v the old 6 speed slush box, plus maybe 2wd v 4wd and perhaps a nicely timed run with very little traffic at a nice constant speed.

Lots of variables. BUT the new petrol units are fighting back on the MPG front and that is why I will go back to petrol next time (probably)...

The new T5 is, in the UK, a FWD. Volvo does offer it as an AWD in other markets however. Ours is a FWD too, with Volvo releasing the AWD about two months after our delivery...

40+ mpg is possible doing a constant nice cruising speed around 70-75.

It is a 2wd Se lux auto (new engine 8 speed). Did 550 miles and showing 41.2. Motorway, A roads, B roads the odd queue. Power delivery (especially in sport mode) very smooth and virtually silent at idle. Haven't quite worked out the stop/start yet. It seems to shut off a bit to readily for my liking but I'm sure I'll work it out. It is probably not as economical as a D4 but it goes like....
