164 fog and spot lights...?!
I bought a "pair" of NOS "foglights" for my 164 recently, and was surprised to find that the second one looked different. On closer inspection, it's a different PN. I looked at the enclosed instructions, and it listed the following:
281350 (fog light, left-hand side) 281351 (fog light, right-hand side) 281353 (spot light, left-hand side) 281354 (spot light, right-hand side) I have a '350' and a '353'. It also suggests that '351' and '354' were added later to make changing bulbs on the RHS of the car easier, whereas earlier cars only had one type, necessitating removal of the RHS lamp. I've never heard of any of this, and had no idea it was possible to get spot lights. Am I simply badly informed, or is this news to (more or less) everyone? I now have one of each, which isn't ideal! Luckily the car is still some way off the road, so I have plenty of time to make a matching pair. I think I'd rather have the spotlights, now I know they exist...! cheers James

James, that's all news to me. I thought there was a simple choice between blanking grill or foglamp.
Can you post up a photo of the two you bought? In the 50s and early 60s, lots of aftermarket lamp upgrades consisted of a foglamp on the left and a spotlamp on the right, but not really in period for the 164. John |

Foggy, if all yours were from the batch available new a couple of years ago as a Dutch remake, I'm surprised. That was never announced on the propaganda I saw then.
A very late 164 I had some years ago had two spots fitted, but they must have been selected from a high street outlet, and the fit and appearance was excellent. As John said, pics would be good. P |

Paul, I think James's were new old stock Volvo, not the repro items like I have.

They're definitely factory items. Glad to hear I'm not going mad!
Lamps - spot on left, fog on right. They're the same size - the photo is deceptive. Boxes, with PNs: Destructions! cheers James

coming from australia where it's harder to find the blanks than the fogs i only came across a spotlight for the 1st time in 2013 and it's still the only one i've ever seen. the car was a 73 and had one fog and one spot light which was an option offered by volvo. the light in the picture above is the same as the spotlight i saw although the one i saw had the years of rust on it. still, made sure it was saved as they are exceedingly rare....
