No such animal exists Derek.

It's Volvos fault for using the Lambda symbol for the engine management/malfunction indicator light because people immediately assume that if the light comes on, it is the Lambda sensor at fault but that isn't always the case.

The Lambda sensor measures the exhaust gas CO content, or to be more exact, the Oxygen content and from that computes the CO content. Sometimes called HEGO sensors (Heated Exhaust Gas Oxygen) they give a signal to the ECU so it can maintain the correct mixture under all conditions. Many other sensors can cause the EML/MIL to come on, not just the Lambda sensor.

Would i be right in thinking your EML (Lambda) light has appeared on your instrument cluster?

Default lambda light

Hi Dave, Yes the lambda light is in the instrument panel. I am awaiting my Volvo specialist advice when they can look at it so I thought I'd try to find an answer. Derek

They will need to read the codes and see what the most likely cause is from there. Could be any one of a number of sensors or, depending on certain fault codes, could be something that isn't even monitored. For example, a faulty fuel pump will often throw a MAF code because the MAF isn't reading the extra air it thinks the engine should be inhaling because the pump isn't delivering fuel for the engine to accelerate. There are a few other anomalies that i can't bring to mind at present but you get the idea!

When did the light first come on and under what circumstances?

Default Round we go again.

Well, the lambda light came on (amongst other problems) - then while she was in garage went off again - garage is not clear why - and has so far stayed off for a couple of hundred miles. So next step is to check the CO levels AGAIN. If they are OK breathe sigh of relief. If they are nearly but not quite OK, use a can of magic jollop that is supposed to clean cats. If that fails it may be time for a new cat. And I am advised that fitting a non OEM cat and weighing in the Volvo one. the value of the platinum in the old one may more than cover the price of the new cat!

Oh, and there is now once more a slight flat spot at about 3500 rpm. And sometimes the turboplus does not plus instantly at 4000 rpm.

Will a cat fault flag an error on a 940? I didn’t think it had any sensors after the cat so as long as the cat and exhaust are reasonably free-flowing it shouldn’t make much difference.

No, only on cars with full OBD-II as they have a post-cat Lambda sensor to monitor cat efficiency.
