164 Carbs running very rich
Can anyone advise me on adjusting the mixtue on the these carbs?
Having had them stipped, cleaned out and new diaphrams put in they are running far too rich and it appears impossible to adjust them. Also the needles will not come out when the grub screw has been taken out. Any advice on how too proceed would be appreciated. Jonathan |

Needles now out and it appears the only adjustment is how far the new ones go back in before tightening.
In the absence of any advice from anywhere, the cost of parts, and possible other issues with the choke mechanism, I have decided to cut my losses and the best course of action now is to have them reconditioned. They are now coming off the car today for this to be done. Unfortunately not expected to be done till end January. Jonathan |

you wont need them reconditioning they dont wear as such . but to adjust you need the volvo press tools there are 3 in all , one to press the lower jet up in the housing to weaken and another to press the jet down using the third spacer tool . It is a specialised job really as you need the tools and a CO meter at the same time .. If going to this trouble start with new needles and jets and diaphragms ... needles and jets wear with unleaded fuel , last approx 30000 miles ...

If you're having them rebuilt get them altered so they're adjustable easily. And decent carb specialist should have the parts to do it. There are two ways it can be done. Either retrofit later pistons so the needle can be adjusted, or fit the jet adjuster from an earlier CD175.

carbies running rich
Hi Jonathan There is an actual set of tools to ajust these stromberg carbies if you have not got them its impossible to do, you have to move the jet up or down where as most carburettors you move the needle, i will enclose a photo of them some one might have some to lend regards John.

yes those are the tools i was referring to .. you may find some at a volvo dealer which has been established longer than 20 years ... the spacer has markings for B20B and B20A that is a basic setting for the jet position but the jet will need further slight adjustment up or down to get the CO right at about 2% .. dont overtighten the top press tool or the top of the carb will break off , there is a tecnique in tighening and tapping the top with a small hammer if the jet is extra tight . Best left to professionals !

My thanks to clan and saintjohn for your informative and interesting reponses.
The carbs are now with Gower and Lee for a recon. Needles and diaphrams needed to be replaced and the choke mechanism was not moving freely so when looking at the cost of parts it appeared not to be a lot extra to have them do this. They also said that (for an extra charge of course) they can obtain a kit that makes them adjustable. Having got myself so far into this unforeseen expense I have decided there is no alternative but to pay up (in for a penny etc.) in the hope that it will avoid having the same problem again in future. They should be back to put on the car in mid January. I am sure (hope anyway) in the new year when I am cruising with the sun roof open and the engine purring sweetly I will think it has all been worth it! Happy new year Jonathan |

They are an excellent company i have had good service from them over many years with Weber , Dellorto and stromberg parts . At least you will be able to adjust the carbs when you get them back and have a smoother more economic engine ..

The first bad news of the new year is that there is not enough room under the carbs for the adjuster kit that Gower and Lee intended to fit for me. It appears it will foul the steering column.
They say that they have investigated and the only other solution they can offer is to put in new different pistons etc but unfortunately do not have any second hand ones to use, so of course price will be much more, and this method not so easy to adjust. It looks like I have no choice but to push on and do this as to put them back without adjustment both they and my mechanic say is unkikely to be satisfactory on an old engine. I am surprised this is not a common problem on this car for which an easy fix has been devised? Jonathan |
