Opinons on load Index
Need to swap out 4 tyres, after years 35k miles the fronts are close rears ok but starting to show cracks.
Planning on CrossClimate 2. However, 2 options available 235/55/19 105W and 235/55/19 101V. Current Michellins are 235/55/19 105V. 105 index is 925kg and 101 is 825kg not planning on carrying a pallet of bricks and within Volvo tolerance think lowest is 98 something like 750kg. By keeping speed rating the same V being 149 mph and W 168 can't see any problem with using 101V and saves me near £100 on the tyres. Not being techy with these things sounds fine to me other views would be welcome?

My decision would be based solely on what the load index is on the tyres as supplied new. I would not go below that. My XC90 came with 105's but not sure about the 60.

You may find some tyre fitters will only fit the rating on the current tyres or higher. They will not fit anything lower or that was my experience anyhow regardless of any specs on the internet.

If you change from factory specifications on items like that and have an accident, any insurance company will likely try and use that as an excuse to not pay out as there is a change to specification without any declaration of the modification. It sounds petty but if it saves them from paying out, you can bet they'll try it.

As others have said. Only fit tyres of the same or higher spec. So going up to W from V is fine. Dropping from V to H is not OK.
Only exception used to be when fitting winters when the insurance company would usually allow a drop of a single stop in speed rating only. That said winter tyres are now better and easier to buy in higher speed ratings. I bought some used alloys with winters for the V60. Everything was fine with them, exactly the same except when I got them home I saw that they were of a lower weight rating (mine should be XL, these were standard). So I ended up buying 4 correct new winter tyres and selling off the ones with too low a rating.

I recently changed the oem 235 55 19 105v continentals on our XC90 to Michelin CC2 SUV. I asked the fitter to fit 105v as they are listed on the michelin website. On the day of fitting the tyres were 105W which is ironic because i believe the XC90 is electronically limited to 112mph. I rarely go above 65mph. I have used CC on our santa fe before we changed to the XC90 and was never impressed with the continentals. |
