15 reg XC90 D5 turbo issues
Hi all,
Owner of 15 plate XC90 D5 here. OH was driving the car the other day on a long motorway journey. Engine management system kicked into limp home mode. Subsequent call outs for RAC and Volvo Care showed that a turbo air intake valve was sticking. Mobile technician from Volvo could release it temporarily with WD40, but advised checking it into a local service centre. The service centre tech found on road test that the turbo would not kick in at under 30 mph, but above this was fine, and surmised there was a problem with the low pressure stage. Sadly for us, he's recommended the whole low pressure turbo is replaced. Does this sound likely? The mobile tech and service centre techs don't seem to be joined up in thinking. I'm surprised the whole LP turbo would need replacing on a 57k mile car! |

Interesting. I have a 16 plate D5 with 47k miles and have just had both turbos diagnosed as failed (very clearly so - seals and or bearings gone and munching through oil). Don't know if 'likely'.
Currently in discussion with extended warranty co - long tale which I'll come back to when it's resolved. But Volvo UK have already offered 45% (which I'm grateful for) which might suggest that they think it an unusual failure. Hope you get a clear (and cheap) diagnosis

Sadly main dealer grease monkeys only know, or are only allowed to replace parts not repair them, an independent garage would probable repair a turbo.
I have a Land Rover Defender and some owners experience turbo waste gate sticking which can usually be fixed by liberally spraying with WD40 or penetrating oil and working the leaver back and forward with molegrips to free it off, the lever will still have strong resistance when worked free unless you disconnect it from the vacuum solenoid. It sounds like that is what the roadside tech did. If that is all it was there is no need to replace a turbo. "BUT" as I have not seen your car I am not in a position to confirm this.
