Default 740 Axle Torque Rod Bushes

Hi

I've just replaced the torque rod bushes, on both rods top and bottom.
I've used polybushes, I'm wondering if this was a mistake.

When driving now under acceleration or deceleration, they is vibration from the back, has anyone any thoughts on this?.

The poly bushes are round whereas the original was convex.

Many thanks

Andrew

Yep, had vibration after fitting them at full load around 2000-2500 rpm and decelerating through that rpm too. IIRC it did eventually get a bit better after a while, but still there. Presumably when they softened up slightly.

Had even more vibration when fitted the TTV flywheel between 1000-3000 rpm, to the point where it was undriveable.

Replaced the gearbox mount, donut, centre bearing and carrier, no dice.

Replaced the big bushes with standard rubber and now its back to the vibration at full boost around 2300 rpm.

The small bushes should be fine to replace with poly, but the big ones are designed like an hourglass for a reason.

As a slight deviation (apologies for threadjacking!), I need to change the torque rod bushes on my 940 diesel estate...is it a job that requires any specialist kit or is it a viable driveway job?

I raised the back end by about 6 inches and put some sleeper blocks under the wheels and lowered the jack.

I used an hydraulic press to get the old ones out and that combined with a vice for re-fitting the bushes.

I was able to replace a small section of fuel pipe that started leaking with me messing about, so glad that showed up when it did.

Round 2 when the rubber ones arrive.

Did you do the axle clamp bushes and the front of the lower arm.
Adding poly bushes in one location will show up wear in other parts and make it feel worse than when it was all sloppy

No I havent done those yet, I have some Volvo ones (axle clamp bushes)on order and was going to do at the same time as the lower arm ones, the lower arm are poly, but the axle ones I ordered are rubber.

Possibly best I do the rest first and then see, rather than just part of it.

Many Thanks

If one of the rubber fuel pipes is leaking Andrew, the others won't be long before they do as well.

While you're under there, i suggest you drop the tank out and renew the rubber fuel hoses all in one go. Mine had a mixture of 12mm and 8mm bore hoses, i suspect yours will be the same. Fit new fuel hose clips as well.

It was a metal section that was leaking, I have about 8 months ago removed the tank and replaced the hoses, the leak was about 2 inches away from the smaller hose connection, so I cut the metal leaking bit out and fitted a new hose again but longer, I was able to replace a plastic fuel pipe clip at the same time which was good.
This is the second leak from a metal section of fuel pipe, they were both on a bend.

After this im changing the fuel filter and was going to clean the remaining fuel pipe, so may find another leak possibly.
