Default Advice, too much £££?

Hi all,

For those who have read my quest for a new speedo, I’ve come across one for £120.
It’s from a k plate, like mine, but it’s diesel and mines petrol.
Q1, will it work in my car?
Q2 is £120 too much?

Any advice gratefully received

The speedo doesn't know it's been in a car running on the Devils Fuel so yes, it will work - as long as it's capable of working.

Can you find another cheaper? If not then £120 is probably the going rate now. About 10 years ago when i needed a cluster for my last 740, the going rate was £30-50 and i was lucky enough to pick one up for £30 with low miles, very little sun exposure (so still looked new) and it did indeed work well.
Now the going rate for a cluster is more like £130-160 so as a speedo is one of the main things you do in fact need, £120 probably isn't out of the way.

Hiya Steve, do you have access to the cluster before paying for it? It might be worth taking the back off so you can assess the condition of the capacitors before committing to buy it.

Also K reg is 1992 and 1993 so you need to be sure it was from a 1992 car as 1993 gauges won't work with your car I believe. It depends how early it was registered in 1993 I suppose and if it was built with the older style capacitors etc.

As per a different thread Lakes still have 2 x 940 inst panels, complete (from petrols).
I have no knowledge as to whether diesel / petrol panels differ (Barry thought they did), but it would help matters for everyone if they did not.
I hope therefore that LS is correct. You might get the Yazaki number, presuming there is one and see if they matched. I would happily urge you to buy and take it off your hands if it did not work, except L402 was made in December 1993 and there were changes from K reg.
Anyway I will see about extraction in the morning and see if we can compare numbers.

The speedos should be the same, however the tachos will be different as the diesels only rev to ~5000rpm and the petrols 6000rpm and they have different drive methods for picking up the pulses. Petrol engines take it from the coil -ve terminal, diesels usually have a "W" terminal on the alternator to output pulses for the tacho.

As such, a complete cluster would be different but the speedos should be the same, after all they all use the sensor in the diff to drive them, not sure if the wiring to the tacho is different but the tacho would need swapping for the petrol unit.

If you can get individual part numbers on the speedos, that should give you a match though.

The clusters changed a lot and you do need to see the back and compare making sure it matches what you have on your car
