The good thing is you can legally decat as part of the conversion which helps improve the economy because it's so clean burning anyway. If that means an old car is as clean as a new one (both of mine very nearly are despite one not having a cat ever and neither were intended to be as clean as a new car) then i can't see why the govt doesn't promote it - as you rightly point out, there is no fresh carbon footprint from manufacturing and even Volvo state one of their EVs takes 50k miles to break even on the carbon footprint! On older cars, the carbon footprint has evaporated over time so are 50k miles ahead of the game before we start playing!

[QUOTE=Laney760;2742891]I would have advised you to have an lpg conversion, mine cost £1400 and has saved me over £8000 but sadly it seems to be a dying car fuel, fewer places stocking it now, Shell are withdrawing it completely they have announced and the new green initiatives coming into place soon mean there will be no place for it.
I toyed with the idea of LPG on the 940 but didnt think I did enough miles to justify it. Dissapointing that Shell have dropped it completely but it must mean there is a lack of demand. I'm sure others will now follow suit.

What it does mean is that the stations that still have it will be used more and they will ultimately gain as you fill up, perhaps having made a detour and fancy a choccy bar or a sandwich while you're there but might also add a tenners worth of petrol for start up so they'll get more that way. Time will tell though............

She's back, delivered to my door and sounding and running sweet!
Bill was sweet too at £160 plus vat... that included the leads, coil-pack and labour plus a check on all the items on it's MOT failure and advisory sheet from Feb.... just wanted a check on them to see they had been done... Anyhow no rough idling and much brisker pick up and performance as two Audi drivers will attest So next up the niggling little things like the broken plastic surround to the Seatbelt opening on the B pillar and then onto the leather.... |

Excellent news there!
It's quite funny showing the Autobahn-stormer Brigade a clean pair of mudflaps from time to time! Especially in a car they don't consider will be A) likely to have that kind of oomph and B) likely to be driven quickly. My 760 is lively enough to give them a few surprises but my other beast is a lot livelier and really upsets those German things! Either way, they're left eating my dust with the howl of a 90deg V6 ringing in their ears!

This week on Planet 960 3.0 24v
So this week has been a great; if slightly sweaty, one with my 960 ...
The pick up and speed now the coil packs and leads have been replaced is well stunning... a real transformative experience no more USS Excelsior for me. It's real Warp Factor 10 and a good kick as I transition rapidly to Volvo Speed..... Yesterday looked to be a stressful one as I walked out to my car; having visited a friend, to find a note under my wiper blade. Oh bugger was the immediate thought what's that? From a distance it looked like a PCN issued by Private Car Parking "Enforcers". Instead it turned out to be a note from an unknown guy called Harry, it read: "If You would consider selling your 960 drop me a text or call me" It then gave his number and was signed Harry. Now it really cheered me up since I was flagging with the heat and anaemia, so thanks Harry you gave me a much needed boost.... BTW is this going to happen a lot now? The heat has exposed the weakness, lack of chill in my Aircon, at best it vigorously blasts out tepid air. So a gas refill seems to be in order? Other good news has been my success in sourcing Tape Cassettes on eBay; so far ACDC, Def Leppard, INXS and Aerosmith have joined the mixed rock tape I found in the centre consule. Also nice to see my average MPG has been hovering around 20, which given the new coil pack/leads and hopefully my less leadened foot should improve.. watch this space So all in all a good week so far, when my next PIP and Pension Payments hit the Aircon will be the next item ... bye for now from a slightly sweaty but very happy VOC member. Those tapes will do your fuel economy no good whatsoever!
Get those going and your foot naturally becomes heavier! On the A/C, have a look at this thread from post #3 onwards : https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...28#post2743928 The solenoid valve block mentioned also controls the heater valve, if that isn't operating it defaults to hot so the A/C will be trying to cool heated air - fine for clearing the windscreen in winter because it's dry air so clears it quicker but in the summer can leave you feeling somewhat less than cool! Make sure that you can select the different places for the air to come out and the recirc button works too, everything is controlled by those valves from cabin temperature to heater valve on/off (it's only ever off on Minimum temp) to direction so will effect the airflow if none are working. Also check what temperature you have the heater controls set on, if not minimum it will only cool to whatever you've set it at, even when working correctly. Worth pulling the lens off the interior light and vacuuming there with a dusting brush on the end of the vacuum nozzle - the cabin temperature sensor is in there. Check you haven't defeated the A/C as well by releasing the A/C button - it should be in. If all else fails, you'll probably need to have it regassed. If it's done properly, the system will be vacuumed down (gas recovered), leak tested, new oil and leak-test dye added (usually optional but useful to have) then regassed with the correct amount of gas and tested. The "high street" people like "Fik Wit" will simply add gas and see if the temperature on the vents drops. Any moisture present inside the system will still be there and may impede the efficiency of the A/C system. Vacuuming the system down will remove the moisture from the system as it will boil off any moisture inside the system. Check your solenoid valves are working first though before shelling out on a regas as you may not need the regas if it can be fixed simply and easily as per my answer in that other thread.

Cambelt Change Mileage, Age or both?
Well I am coming up to three months of 960 ownership and I am loving every journey I take the "Smiles per Gallon" seem to be unlimited
And I am a little late in organising the paperwork that came with the beast; but hey better now than never, anyhow I note that the camebelt and waterpump were last changed on 14th August 2019. The mileage was 117,339 and now stands at 119,350(ish) So should I be thinking of replacing the cambelt and waterpump at a mileage or age related intervals? I think I read that the belt should be changed every 70,000 miles or 7 years is that right? |

Whichever comes first, it isn't one or the other especially on a Whiteblock where if it does snap you are well and truly up sh1t creak as the head rebuild will be extensive and needs specialist knowledge and tools.

In fact, i'd be inclined to do it every 6 years/60k miles, whichever comes first and ensure the tensioners are renewed with new securing bolts - even if they look ok. In the August edition of Practical Classics, someone with a V50 (staff member in the Bangernomics section) had a timing belt replaced on a V50 i think it was (still essentially a whiteblock) and the tensioner wasn' ternewed but the the bolt holding it failed a few miles down the road. He was lucky and got away without lunching the engine. Also adding 0.5L of Carlube ATF-U to the engine oil (other synthetic ATFs with a viscosity of 32 will probably work too, not tried them so can't say for sure) will help quieten sticky tappets, improve compression by freeing sticky valves and rings and generally improve things internally. Also helps to revive dry oil seals that might be weeping or about to start.
