Wanted: 200 Headlights

I need some headlights for our 1991 240 estate. The nicer, the better, although to be honest The condition isn't too important, provided that they're good enough to get though an MoT.


I'm happy to travel if it's easier.

I think Dave (LS) wrote a piece of fitting them some time ago. If I recall the two halves just clip together but there is a bit of a knack to getting the clips off. Dave will probably be along later and explain.

Fitted aftermarket lamps (reflectors) to my '88 240 some years back:~
I think they came from Brookhouse from memory all fine to date.

The clips can be a little delicate: sort of ball & socket fixing.
Lubrication helps and warmer plastic as they can be brittle (keep the older fittings for a rainy day)

My tips are:
1. Apply penetrating oil (plus gas) to all three nuts holding each headlight to the car. Accessible from under the bonnet. Leave the oil to do its job. Repeat. Repeat. etc etc. I did that daily for some time and the buts undid easilu. There are experiences reported in the forum of grief when those nuts are tried to be undone while still corroded.

2, The while plastic clips inside the headlights usually break. Get new one. A good reflector kit should include new white plastic clips.

3. The clips holding the lens tzo the light body just need patience. They can "flyoff £. I did that job in the estate car load area.

4. There is piece of metal fitted like the clips, it is a stop for the headlight wiper. Good idea to treat it for rust.

5. Some garages just fit a complete bew headlight. It is worth getting a good secondhand headlihjy if your garage does not want to change the reflectors, or want a lot of money because of the labour time.

6. New reflectors make a great imprzovement to the headlights.

Thanks go to all who've pointed me in the right direction. Unfortunately, I have lost some of my dexterity and think fitting reflectors might prove a bit difficult for me. The job looks too time-consuming to pay a workshop - or have I missed something?


So I'm back to the original search for replacement headlight assemblies.
Anyone?

Pattern part, but £100 cheaper than the Volvo branded one.

I'll say it now before you try and remove the headlamp/indicator assembly (for they are clipped together): The small clip that holds the indicator on will break if you try to unclip it. Heat it up before attempting or you'll be busy with the glue.
