It amazes me that for all the safety features on the Volvos they choose only to have one rear fog light which I think is bloody dangerous as it can easily be mistaken for a motor bike in fog or at the very worst does not mark the full profile of the vehicle.
I prised the fog lamp housing out of my near side rear position thinking a bulb had blown but there is no wire to it or lamp holder and I wonder if any teccies on here have done a mod? I mean how hard could it be to run a wire in the boot from the lamp on the off side holder and install another bulb holder in the cover on the near side rear so you have a pair of rear fog lamps hence in the fog marking the full width of the car in bad conditions. Is it perhaps illegal to do this or have I missed the point somewhere? I remember some years back about when ford focuses first emerged they started only fitting one rear fog and one reverse light in the lamp cluster I thought it was wrong then and I do now! SORRY MODERATORS I HAVE POSTED IN WRONG THREAD COULD YOU MOVE THIS TO XC90 GENERAL THANKS!!

I recall that it's something to do with UK Construction and Use Regulations that only require a single rear fog lamp to the offside which must be 100mm from a stop lamp.
I don't think it's illegal to have two rear fog lamps, in fact I once had a new Volvo S60 which only had a bulb fitted to the offside, I noticed that there was actually a bulb holder in the nearside cluster, I fitted a bulb and both rear fog lamps worked perfectly and the car passed two MOT tests whilst in my ownership. I suppose that it saves Volvo a few quid when building XC90's to only fit one lamp and wiring, but I do agree that it looks a bit odd and having two would contribute to safety! Paul |

Thanks for your feedback chaps and I too think they should have 2 as it marks the full width of the vehicle (see my comments above re motor bikes).

On my previous XC90 fitted a light in nearside from a left hand drive XC90 and also installed the wiring as I thought it really stood out in the fog.

you can fit a second if you wish, but must be identical (which it would) however the OS is mandatory, so if you fit a second and the OS blows, you could get pulled by police and fined (not sure about points)for showing a fog light on NS, if you have only OS and it blows who would know, as number of times visibility is actually low enough to meet the requirement for fog lights is so rare in this country. I believe there was something muted about it being done to avoid confusion with brake lights. |

The sole purpose of the rear fog light is to give the vehicle behind early warning that there is a car in front when visibility is VERY Poor . ( Not very often in UK ) You dont need two "to define the vehicle width" , that is what tail lights are for . After first seeing the fog light it's job is done , you get closer and then see the tail lights which define the vehicle width . Two rear fog lights are very blinding especialy as people leave them on far too long when conditions improve !
