Default S40 GDI 1.8

Hey Guys,

This looks like a good forum for info, I hope to be a frequent visitor.

I have a S40 (2000 P1) 1.8 GDI, Im led to believe that this has a Mitsubishi Engine and Gearbox. I have a couple of little problems, Im wondering if any of you guys can help....

1. Gearbox - Makes a clunking noise when going from 1st to 2nd, and less frequently from 2nd to 3rd. The car is with a local dealer as I write this message and they have come back and said there are no faults and this is just the way the box operates, its normal to be clunky and crunch a bit. Anybody else have a GDI with this problem?

2. Engine - Erractic idle. When left idling for a few mins, the engine management light comes on. They are cleaning the throttle housing to try to correct this one, but they tell me there is nothing in the codes that say theres a problem. Again, anybody had a similar problem??

3. Servicing - Just been quoted £668 for a 60K service from a Warrington dealer. I appriciate that this is a cam replacment service but christ £700 is a lot of cash!! Any recommendations for a north west based specialist that can service at more realistic prices.

Can anybody help??

My 1999 GDi Crunches from first- Second Gear on the first change when the engine is cold ie left out overnight at this time of the year.

The erratic idle is not a problem although it does vary when the air conditioning kicks in on hot days.

60000 mile service cost me in June £584.00 that include extras Such as New spark plugs at £50.00 Volvo changed the life mileage on these after a previous service and new v belt that should have been changed on the previous service extra £30.00.

When I purchased the car highest service bill was £484 for the 60000 mile service.

Its worth phoneing round your local dealers.

The dealer that I last used in Lincolnshire said they are now getting new customers in from London because they are cheaper, and that was including the round trip of 300 miles.

ERRACTIC IDLE IS IN MOST CASES PRESSURE RELEVE VALVE
THERE IS SOFT WEAR THAT MAY SOLVE THE PROBLEM

a) My GDI (2000 W reg) has no such gearbox issues. It is slick and silent, like many Japanese boxes. Your dealer is having you on (no?! never....know a decent idependent specialist?)

b)GI has many peculiarities which I investigated before buying the car. Use quality fuel, and drive it hard occassionally. Spark plug gap is critical, but doesn't sound like a problem in your case. Don't know about software fixes for the pressure relief valve.

c) Cam belt is due at 60k, most Volvos have it at 80k. It involves removing an engine mount, which is one reason mechanics allegedly hate this particular model! It costs a friend with a GDI £400 alone, at an Edinburgh Volvo dealer.

Regards

Tim

That is a stupidly high quote! The dealer wouldn't happen to be Rybrook would it? I drive a 98 1.8 S40 but its not a GDI. If your a local lad give Bryn Motor Company a ring on 01942 711112, they used to run the Walkdens franchise in Wigan before Volvo UK pulled the plug, they are independant experts now and provide excellent service and i use them all the time. My dad also take his T5R there as well. Its just of Jct 25 of the M6 northbound on the way into wigan.
Good Luck
James

Hi there

With reference to your bearbox problem, it sounds as though your car has the same characteristic as mine. My car has now done 37000 miles. On each service I complain about it, but my dealer says it is how this model is. They have stripped the linkage a few times (the mechanism is operated by cables) and regreased the mechanism which has helped for a while, but I feel it spoils an otherwise very good car.
