slight knocking noise
Without me spending lots of time trying to find the cause I was wandering if any of you bright helpful people had ever experienced a slight knock that comes from a front wheel (drivers side on mine) when you press the break. You don't have to press hard. I have looked/ tested the ball joints and wheel bearing and they seem fine. The noise is a little cluck, maybe the sound you would hear if the caliper was a bit loose and moving slightly on the bolts (I will check this). It does not always make the noise but I have found that if I drive forward slowly and break it makes it and then if I reverse and break it makes it again. Keep driving in the same direction and you are unlikely to get the clunk again for some time.
I am hoping that one of you have had this and know the part that needs attention. Whilst I'm on the subject I have also noticed steering wheel judder at about 60mph which is new (I had put this down to wheels needing balancing but may be linked). There are some kind of link to what I beleive is an anti roll bar. this link has a ball joint at each end - would this make this sound? Any help much apprieciated as always. Neil |

Hi, I've got the same problem. short knocking noise when moving off or slowing down - in forward or reverse gears. I've seen this post on one of the other forums - http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showpo...5&postcount=10
I'm hoping this is what my problem is - I'm going to get the new bolts and give it a try anyway. I've also got a knocking noise (unrelated I think - as the above noise is from both front wheels) from the front offside wheel also over rough road surfaces, sounds like something is loose. Can't feel anthing obviously loose. Thought I'd try change the drop-link at £15 before taking it to the dealer. Worth doing? or is this more likely to be control arm etc. Mileage is 100k. Thanks, James |

Thanks James,
This does sound like the same problem. I have a Jaguar Mk2 (1967) which makes the same noise but from the back wheel. I know in the Jaguars case its the spline interface between the hub and wire wheel which is a little worn and therefore moves slightly and knocks. This does sound like a likely source and I will look further into it. Neil Last edited by NCS XC90; Mar 10th, 2009 at 23:30. Reason: pressed enter before I wrote anything |

I also had this noise and it turned out to be the lower suspension arm. I had it changed (after it failed it's MOT because of this) for £161 by my Indie.

Hi all,
Took the 14mm bolt off today. My car (XC90) did not have the rubber cone part shown in the link from James. I've put it back on a tightened it to the correct torque. It does seem to have at least change the pitch of the cluck if not fully gone. I think I'm going to order a new set and see how I get on. Neil |
