Default Instrument cluster fluster

Decided to tackle the non functioning Odometer .
I was checking the bulbs from the centre console* and clock* at the time and decided; one out all out.
This will be handy if you need to change bulbs etc.
Mine is the earlier model,
Top screws of steering shroud are removed,

The bottom ones (beside key and choke) can be slackened off.(no pic)

The shroud has tabs that locate below the cluster.

The shroud is tilted up at the rear and lifted towards the steering wheel.
The two screws are removed

The kick panel below the steering can be detached at the top for access to wiring and speedo drive cable.(no pic my bad)

The speedo has a quick twist off connection. Just half a turn.

The electric connections are, a crescent 5 wires and a circle.

They go in here for future ref.

There are two tabs on top of the instrument cluster that have to be depressed

And pushing from the rear remove the cluster.

At the back ,(no tacho)remove the screws on the black blanking plate and around the speedo back plate

Removing the two slot screws near the speedo drive releases the back plate.

I think the tags can be twisted, but not sure....
Now this is where the problems start..
Apologies' for dreadful quality

the black worm drive is engaged in the white worm drive
behind and on the same shaft as the white worm is a 17 tooth gear with a crack from the centre out.
Looking at the clock carefully, I have no idea of the black drives function, it's shaft comes from the brass threaded part (viewed from rear of clock) at 10 o'clock to speedo input.(Orange highlight)
To remove this and the white gears would I think require the removal of the speedometer needle.
This is a delicate operation and if I mess it up I'll need a new speedometer!
Knowing how far I've gone is not as important as how fast I'm going!
So, until I have more knowledge I'll put it back as I found it.
Assembly is of course reverse of removal.

To be continued........

The worm driven gear looks a bit toothless bud!🤨

(1) top black gear (purpose unknown)
meshes with (2) white gear
on same shaft as ( 3) 17 tooth gear
meshed with (4)
(2) and (3) rotate the numbers on the main 6 digit display.
