Test drive today
Had a test drive this morning of a Momentum T6 on 20" wheels with Conti tyres. I'd asked for a drive on 19" wheels but they'd been changed over the previous day. Have to say I was disappointed with the 'jiggly' nature of the ride and the overall noise and resonance/drumming on the 20". I was expecting far better from a premium car and I don't think I could live with it as it is. I also found the gear change slightly odd in that it seemed to only hold 1st for a fraction of a second then there was a noticeable shift to 2nd. Again, I was expecting something smoother from a modern box. The shifts higher up seemed okay. Kick-down produced a lot of engine noise.
Unfortunately the salesman was new to Volvo and could tell me very little about the car (he's going on a course on Monday). I eventually spoke to the sales manager who is going to try to sort out a drive on 19" wheels but he says that all the cars they're getting in over the next few months have 20". On the positive side, I was generally impressed with the dashboard and particularly liked the large central screen. I think I need an extended drive to help me decide. |

I had similar feedback from my test drive back in summer (also with inexperienced sales guy, but annoyingly he kept trykng to convince me I was wrong). Surprisingly noisy wheels and hesitant great box at low speeds. Still ended up buying the car - it's hard to override all the positives. You don't get used to motorway road noise i notice it every time - it is too loud for such a refined car but mine is a suburban warrior so I don't get to hear it that often. I am hoping polestar will help out with the low speed gearbox changes. Getting that done in a couple of weeks.
If you are going back you are probably on the hook - can't blame you. The important thing is to recognise the shortcomings and knowingly accept them if you go for it then you will be very happy with it (unless you get one with electric faults or leaky sunroof or....). Mine has every option imaginable and nothing has gone wrong so far since September, but I am crossing my fingers quietly as it's going for the first software update. |

The new XC90 is known to "need" air suspension to get rid of the noise.....expensive perhaps, but well worth it!
Driven the D5 with air suspension and while the engine is underpowered, the ride was superb. Better go for the T6 or even the T8!

Hi. I thought that the noise was tyre brand and profile related and not suspension (air or normal) related. Can I ask where you get your information from please? Everything i have read has referred to noise from 20in contis and nothing about air suspension......

I'm on air. It does not solve the road noise problem.

Quote:
The road noise is probably due to the tarmac used in the UK. The XC90 i drove was on smooth Swedish roads (not that all are smooth though). Its the same when i am over in the UK with my own car, much more noisy than in say France, Holland etc. The conti's are normally a nice and quiet tyre and i think that the only way to get rid of it as much as possible would be to go down the smaller wheels road...(no pun intended).

Bad tarmac or not xc90 emphasises the noise on concrete sections of m25 like no other car I've been in even though it's quieter than other cars elsewhere, though not as quiet as one would expect for the money. In my book it's a small road noise problem and a serious resonance issue.

Well, I didn't get the promised phone calls from either the salesman nor the sales manager. Not impressed.
Looks like I'll be visiting the Lexus dealer again. They know how to look after customers. |

Update: I got a call this evening from the original sales guy I saw last Wednesday (he'd been away since). He sorted things out and I'm doing another test drive on Thu with 19" wheels fitted.

Got a call to say that they couldn't source a car with 19" wheels locally.
Salesman offered to arrange for Volvo UK to deliver one to me for a 48 hour test drive. This should be towards the end of next week. Getting there slowly. |
