Angry Unusual Position Light Problem

Upon turning the car on both rear offside position lights flash once then go off and stay off.
Bulbs OK, checked and changed. Fuse OK, checked and changed. All other position lights on car working properly; all other lights in this cluster working properly apart from the small LEDs which show no sign of life at all, and haven't for a while.
Circuit and contacts must be OK or else I wouldn't get the flash.
Suspect either the rear fuseboard unit, or the trailer electrical unit (Volvo fitted - for the towbar and is wired in the circuit) or the wiring itself as it crosses from the rear fuseboard to the light cluster....but just guessing!
Anyone met this before?

There is electronic protection on the rear for short circuits , it is detecting excessive current flow and turning the light off ..

Thanks for that valuable info.
After a bit of a struggle I managed to remove the light cluster and discovered that the strip of LEDs and its circuit board were wet. Dried it out and lo! Lights. No LEDs though, looks like its the end for them. And that's as good as a result as I could have hoped for.
