The AA mechanic got as far as looking at this sender 2 1/2 years ago when he diagnosed we had run out of fuel but I was never able to tell if he had moved it (clockwise or anticlockwise) as I did not know where the marks were aligned before his intervention. After more than 2 years with no problems I assumed it was fixed, but recent experience suggests otherwise.

You made a very helpful comment earlier in this thread, back in 2010, where you suggested turning the sender clockwise. This time you suggest moving it anticlockwise. Does this mean the position of the float is easily obstructed in either direction. Is it a lot of extra work to take the sender out so I can look in the tank and see what is actually there to cause obstruction? I guess I should disconnect the battery to avoid sparks around the open tank if I do this.

It is possibly more information than I need, but why do you think it is most probably the left sender and not the other one?
yes there have never been cases of the right sender fouling anything ...
if i came across this problem i have always turned it clockwise to turn the float away from the side of the tank , however in recent years volvo have suggested turning it clockwise to clear the pipes ! turning it one way or the other seems to stop the problem , but it is easy to remove if you want to investigate yourself , but you have to unclip the pipes from the bottom of the sender to withdraw teh sender . and thoroughly clean the rubber O seal and its seat from grit otherwise the sender will leak ..

Guess you probably mean anti-clockwise here. (ie. clockwise to clear tank side, anticlockwise to clear pipes?)

Thanks for your help. It may be a week or two before I get chance to investigate.

Hi Clan I've been suffering intermittent failure of my (S60R) fuel gauge for a while now. I tried to give it a wiggle at the weekend, do I need the special tool to do this? Can't see what else would do the trick. Local specialist says replace both senders, I'm being quoted £440 odd parts cost, would I be able to replace the faulty parts myself, I'm pretty handy, but worried I might be putting an airlock into the tank. many thanks in advance! nick

You won't need to change both will you , but the problem is determining which one it is . I would check the external wiring which is on the right side of the tank , the join between sender and car loom . You wont get any air locks by the way . you do need the especial tool to loosen and tighten the plastic ring holding the senders in . Always use new green rubber seals and more importantly blow the dust out of the seat they fit into .

regarding checking which sender is faulty can only be done by removing each one and lifting it up and down whilst you watch an ohm meter connected across it .

Before pulling out the main right hand unit after disconnecting the left hand sender , attach a long string so that you are able to pull the transfer pipe back over from the right to the left side when refitting .

thank you very much for this Clan, the parts price is a shocker, hopefully I can fix it myself, haven't got an ohmmeter will look into one

I assume he meant a standard meter set to resistance instead of voltage

for example this or higher quality depending on your budget

with the dial turned to the bottom left green section
