Do you mind me asking what you paid for it? How many miles and how many owners?
PM me if you prefer I have one (a Gul 855) and am thinking of selling it in January. |

Let's just say I bought it for a very good price - but I knew I was taking on a lot of work to get it to showroom condition. My stepson and I are pretty handy with the spanners so the labour costs were minimal but the parts bill soon mounts up. To give you an idea of what has been done: Professional light machine polish to bodywork to get back to showroom condition All new badges to body Wheels refurbished and re powder coated in genuine Volvo anthracite 2 New Pirelli P zero's to front New front brake calliper All 4 discs and pads replaced with genuine Volvo New rear genuine Volvo exhaust and tail trim All turbo pressure pipes replaced with silicone upgrades (Do88) All engine vacuum lines replaced with silicone lines New turbo coolant pipes New turbo oil lines, gaskets and o rings New turbo recirculating valve New vapour canister purge valve New front, rear and side engine mounts, new torque bar and new top mounts Top cam cover lifted, incorrect silicone sealant cleaned off, mating surfaces prepped and correct anaerobic sealant applied to cure oil seepage from retaining bolts New cam seals New cam belt, idler and tensioner New vacuum hose for brake servo New throttle cable Idle air valve cleaned New coolant header tank New coolant New 72aH Bosch battery 2 new outer CV boot kits Auto box oil leaks from dipstick tube and dipstick sump repaired Auto box PNP switch cleaned Heater recirculating flap plate actuating arm repaired (what a pain that was) Aircon re-gassed New wiper arms and blades Installed tailgate trim reinforcement kit Full service along with replacement genuine Volvo Distributor cap, rotor arm and Magnacor plug leads. Engine boost check with a calibrated gauge showed 9.9 psi normal and 11.5 psi in overboost - all good there then I'm sure I've forgotten the odd thing here and there. It's been professionally valued at £15,000 to £16,000 in spite of more owners than you can shake a stick at and 170,000 miles. As they say, the past is history, It's current condition that matters with a collectable car. I have a pretty full history going back to when it was new. I just pulled up a load of archived sales on my PC and that seems about right as in the past year, for showroom condition cars, I've seen Gul Yellow manuals go for £17,000 to £20,000 and autos for £14,000 to £17,500. Personally, I can't see why manuals go for more - they aren't quicker in the real world of motoring. Mine will spin the wheels off the line if you use too much throttle, the gearchanges are very rapid in sport mode and it goes like a train. Although the auto is torque limited at the flywheel, the torque converter always acts as a torque multiplier. So, as long as it's not in lock-up, the torque at the wheels is usually equal to or greater than the manual. It's torque, not BHP that governs acceleration. The T5R only has torque converter lock up in 4th gear and then only at 115mph plus, so torque multiplication is always occurring (great for acceleration but lousy for m.p.g). Hope this has all been of interest John |

Thanks, John. That's quite a list and a lot of it sounds familiar.
Unlike you, I think I overpaid for mine — I allowed myself to get a bit too excited — but now I'm concerned that it's getting used too much. I've done 7,000 miles in it since buying it in July, and though it's not making a massive contribution to the overall mileage (it's approaching 130K now), I'm not sure it should be working this hard at its age. Nevertheless, I'm encouraged by your valuation since mine is a two-owner car with almost a full main dealer service history up until the last couple of years. A few things are left to do, and maybe after that, I might sell it. |

If you don't need the cash, I'd keep hold of it, use it (regular use keeps everything in good condition - nothing worse than standing idle), cherish it and watch the value grow. I can see non-import 855 Gul T5R's becoming £30K cars in 4 or 5 years given trends. I didn't mention, all springs, shocks, nivomats and top mounts, control arms, radiator, intercooler, aircon pump, water pump, oil cooler pipes and loads of minor stuff all replaced less than 8,000 miles ago by previous owner. Hence why I say it's now mechanically perfect. John |

Ah, that's encouraging, thank you.
Yes, compared to 370K, mine is barely run-in! I'm not blessed with the skills, nor the garage accommodation, to carry out all the work myself, so I hope if I do keep it, I don't end up replacing all of that lot on it. If I do, I think I'd need it to be worth £30K afterwards! |
