Default 2006 XC90 V8 Steering Wheel Vibration/Noise

My xc90 V8 (2006) has a vibration/knocking type noise coming through the steering wheel when turning it back and and forth when the vehicle is stationary. It is particularly bad when I was turning the steering wheel when the wheels were on snow or a slippery type surface (such as wet smooth bricks or tiles) - the vibration/noise becomes quite pronounced. The vibration/knocking noise is also present when turning at slow speeds.

The Volvo dealer told me that this is normal for the vehicle and it is due to play in the steering rack. I have owned several Volvos and have never experienced same before.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

sell the car - they are useless. this is an all to common fault but most of the volvo owners are too stupid to recognise it. It is poort engineering.

Hello buildigo do you actually own an XC90? or did you just join the forums for some sport and to slag them off ? ... you posts are honestly not very helpful.

There is an adjustment on the rack at the drivers side low down facing backwards , a 17 mm Nut in a round housing , it has calibration marks around the edge , if you tighten this 2 or three divisions it may help , ( the nut has stiff threads ) if the steering goes stiff you have gone too far .
