Default No Heating on S60 P2 D5 only 1 pipe is hot? Help pls!

Hi Guys!
My retired Volvo that I given to my dad has seem to lost all heating and this isn’t good for winter driving! It be a shame to get rid of it as the car seems to be solid and going strong still! It is a 2006 D5 S60.

I suspect it to be a heater matrix but before going at it because it seems to be a big job with taking the dash out I think im going cut the dash instead!
Just in case I miss something, I tried looking on Vida there isn’t any code and I tried calibrating the CCM still seem to be no heat. I check the 2 pipes that goes into the car only the right pipe is hot and the left 1 is cold.

The car temperature gets up to temp (half way)
Only other thing I can think off to try before changing heater matrix is maybe Cabin filter or flushing the matrix from the bulkhead. Are they worth wasting time or should I just go straight at it? I have never flushed a matrix before as well so any tips will be much appreciated!

Correct me if Im wrong this is from Vida, the part number for heater matrix is 9171503? Do I need anything else if I were to change it?

Thanks guys

it doesn't require dash removal at all, you slide it out to the side into the passenger footwell

that's not to say it's an easy job or anything but definitely not the big arse ache you seem to be concerned about

definitely try a flush first, drain some out first, carefully disconnect the two big pipes that go into the bulkhead being careful not to snap the clips, run a hose through in both directions. there are videos of it on youtube for reference purporses (also for the matrix replacement)

im assuming replacement would also require a pair of little rubber O rings (or at least it would probably be sensible to replace them) but again watching a video or two would be the best place to start

Thank you for your message. After doing research, the RHD models all need to have dashboard remove or you can cut into it which i rather do its only a £500 car. LHD on the otherhand can be done without taking the dashout.

Sure! i assume the clips are easy to remove? Is there any solutions can put into the matrix or just tap horse and water will do the tricks?

Thanks! i will search on Vida and see if i can get the part number for these O rings! unless i can find a kit that has it all together!

Im certain I've seen a video of someone doing it without any cutting ?! that would be a crazy design surely

edit: it seems you might be right ! wtf sorry to be misleading.. what an idiotic bit of design !

I must have only watched the LHD one and just got confused I suppose

I didn't end up actually doing the job myself so I don't have any 1st hand info im afraid, I'd only be rehashing what I saw on the vid which as you can see already may not be 100% accurate lol

mind you it wouldn't be the first time Volvo designed things to be impossible to change would it

bumper removal to change headlights springs to mind ..

when I cleaned out the radiator in my mini recently I used kilrock which is what we use to clean out the kettle, half a bottle of that and boiling water via some sort of funnel arrangement would probably be my choice, leave an hour or so then flush with cold water both ways

unless someone comes along with some reason why that's not a good idea because volvo makes their matrixes out of some special type of metal or whatever..

Had the exact same issue last year in -11c windscreen was frozen constantly. The matrix was that blocked it took 5 coolant flushed to get it running properly over a week. We used the liquid moly radiator flush.

As others have said try to be really careful taking the hose clips off as we broke both of ours and they’re a pain to replace and driving without them isn’t a long term solution as you’ll lose coolant eventually - we found often on the M4!

Our D5 had the engine brace across and I would recommend taking that off too if you’ve got hands like ham.

If you do break the clips then there is a Volvo parts place in Bristol that stocks them … some main dealers claimed they couldn’t source them. They’re not cheap and had to take ours to a specialist to replace the host for each side of the matrix.

Good luck.

I've wondered in the past if it would actually be better to cut the pipes, do the flush and then find some sort of double ended barbed connector pieces and jubilee clips to 'repair' the pipes back together again

like this but whatever the right size is

not only would that avoid damaging the clips but also makes pouring in and directing outwards to a bucket or drain hole a bit easier with some extra hose perhaps..

dunno just food for thought, it'd probably be the way I would do it

Smile brace

Def worth removing the brace to get to that area.. 15 &18mm fixings, really improves access.. good luck,

sorry for late update, managed to take the clips off without breaking them.. did drop one in the engine bay took ages looking for it the flush didnt go to plan, minium water flow was coming out each end it seems pretty blocked i guess!

i think we will need to change the matrix but dont want to do it then it is not that as i assume it could also be the climax control itself or the motor ? but because only 1 pipe is hot i assume it will be the matrixs.

thanks again for everyones help. i will tackle the matrix maybe its a shame to get rid of the car so i might just cut the bottom part of the dash out.
