Default 460 Turbo Diesel Water Pump Failure

The water pump on a recent acquisition is leaking badly. Is this a common failure on these motors?

Waterpumps tend to go after something like 120kmiles. Not an expensive part though. Waterpump

Thanks for the link. I have also found one on eBay for just under £20 (all in - BNIB). The 460 engine may be getting moved to a V40 so that would be a good time to swap it.

Look for Hepu water-pumps.They are excellent.
Should last at least 120k.
No problems with the water-pump on diesel models.

Good luck!

Has anyone actually done this swap on a 1.9 turbo diesel 460? 360dood reckons that there is not a lot of space to do this 'in situ'. Is it a case of removing the pulley first?

I had one changed on a petrol 2.0 recently.
The mechanic said it was a git of a job, loads of bolts on the pump and 2 of them are hidden under the cam cover.

This is one of those jobs where a cambelt/water pump/drivebelt change would maybe be best doing all in one go.

If the engine is out then its easy.

(Mine's a 1.7 petrol) :The water pump is driven by the auxillery belt which is good because you don't have to disassemble the timing. It is tight there but not as bad as in some other cars. The water pump pulley does have to be taken off (loosen the bolts while the belt is still on it) and with a rod or 'bar move the block over a bit so the pulley can be taken out. After that the bolts have to be taken out of the water pump housing and the new pump fitted with a new gasket.

I changed the water pump in May.
Either way, you will have to remove the pulley...
Hint: If you never changed the short-large hose which goes from the water pump to the engine block, you should change this part too. This is an inexpensive 10-15cm hose but regarding that is working in heat conditions, after 150-200k miles this part might give away on (very) high revs.

Thanks, all, for the tips. I'll make sure that 360dood has a read before he gets back on this job.

To the best of my knowledge the pump P/N is the same for both the diesel and petrol engines used across the 400 range and the early S/V40 diesel engine.

The propeller on the pump fitted to earlier 400 models was upgraded to a better design so, even though these early types should no longer be available from the dealer I have seen them crop up on eBay, just check you don't fit this early type.

If you buy a pump from Volvo it will have a Renault stamp on it.

As said, the pump can be removed without disturbing the cam belt but it can be quite restrictive. Loads of fun for 360dood

P.S. They advise not to use any form of sealant apart from the supplied paper gasket. This has always surprised me because it's not uncommon for these pumps to leak. What if one was to do away with the paper gasket and use Volvo chemical gasket in its place? Anyone tried this?
