We have a 2011 V70 SE Lux D3 Auto and it managed 50mpg on a 3 week road trip to the south of France on a variety of roads, from mountain switchbacks all the way to motorway tolls.

Life in the UK, trips to the grocery shop etc, it's more like 35-40mpg

Over optimistic computer probably more a factor.
Car is 2014 V70 D5 MANUAL.
cheers Bob
Manuals are more economical

Must admit that I hadn't considered the autobox or aircon as factors, though of course they are. The aircon stays on all year round. I seem to remember seeing in the handbook that it's suggested to turn it off at speeds below 30mph. I may have dreamt that last bit.

Proper driving style also helps a lot. I tend to only use my auto for long distance motorway stuff so it doesn't make hardly any difference.

I used to get miles more mpg than a certain other member of our household when we used to share a manual car

I would be 100% certain I would get better consumption if I was driving an auto and they were driving the same car in manual guise !!

You're gonna end up sleeping on the couch if your missus finds out you've been bad-mouthing her

I tend to drive more like a Granny than a Grand Prix driver these days so I avoid traffic light challenges and the like. Even so, my wife usually gets better mpg in our other car than I do.
