rear brakes
Hello all,
I'm changing the rear brake pads on my 2002 S40 (the dealership wanted $158) and I would like to know the procedure for compressing the piston back into the caliper. I think that the twisting action involved in the rear caliper pistons is a function of having the parking brake actuate the piston without using the hydraulic system. I have the tool to rotate the piston but I am wondering if I will need to disconnect the parking brake cable from the caliper to get the piston to rotate freely. These brake pads wear out so quickly, especially for rears, that I am assuming that lots of you have changed the pads yourselves before. Any help or input about this procedure would be greatly appreciated. |

RE: rear brakes
No you do not need to disconnect the handbrake cable. Just follow the normal method for changing a set of pads. Once you have placed the piston tool in place and begin turning the handle the caliper should move freely. I actually did it with a set of mole grips albeit very carefully so as not to damage the seal. Depending on how worn the pads are you may find that some fluid comes out of the brake reservoir but this just needs cleaning off. Once you have finished apply the handbrake several times this serves to move the piston into the correct position. I bought a pattern set of pads for £22 and the discs for £28. So I understand not going to Volvo.
