Suspension problems

The right rear suspension on my s40 appears to be lower than the left rear. I have had the car for over 2 years and I only noticed recently. I measured the distance from the centre of the wheel to the bottom of the wheel arch and there is a 3cm difference. I took the car to FRF Volvo in Swansea and they put it on ramps, bounced up and down on it, said there was nothing wrong and tried to charge me £27 for the privildge. The car handles perfectly and the only poblem is that its annoying me because its obviously not right, the dealer said If I couldn't live with a "wonky car" they'd replace the suspension for approx £400. Can anyone suggest what the prob could be.

Think the suspension 'settles' after a while. You don't notice it on brand new cars. After a few years they seem to sit a little bit low on the right hand side. Probably to do with road camber and perhaps driving a lot with only yourself in the car. Left hand drive Volvos seem to sit low on the left hand side - hence my answer above. The only Volvo I've had which didn't show this was a 480ES a few years ago which had fairly stiff suspension.

Have a look at 3 year and older Volvos at a couple of dealers.

Happy to live with it as car performs fine, just never noticed before and was bracing myself for a large bill.

Hello mate,

I have an S40 T4 and the same problem. In my opinion this was unacceptable. I complained to Volvo head office until they pressured the dealership to replace the rear suspension-FREE.

The cause was never ascertained but thats their problem and not mine.

I've looked into this and non estate cars are well known for weak rear suspension.

Push a bit harder.
