Security
Hey Guys,
Question about security on a V40. I have the Volvo remote locking (Lock key + unlock Key), and I have a red LED on the RH dash speaker. I assumed that meant I had an immobaliser. However, if I stop the car, then start it again no probs. On my 440 I would have to unlock the car again using the remote if I turned off the ignition for more than a few secs. Do the immobalisers work differently on the x40s from the 440s, or do I not have one / have one that doesn't work? Laters Stu |

RE: Security
The immobilisers do work differently on the X40s.
It reads the chip inside the key and if it has the correct code, you can start the engine. Wrong key or key with no code = car no starto. That way, even if someone were to scan your remote to unlock the car, without the key, the car simply will not start. Hence the reason why more toe-rags try to halfinch your keys these days rather than break into the car and hotwire it. Dan. |

RE: Security
Ohhhh, I didn't realise I had coded keys. That clears that up anyway. Thanks.
As for the stealing of keys - amate of mine had that happen. He runs a Lotus Esprit as his fun car. One night his house was broken into, but he had the keys upstairs and thankfully they didn't think to check it out. But the did find the keys to his company Golf. The police found it a couple of days later buried in an electrical shop window in Birmingham... Sti |

RE: Security
Don't know about the series 2 cars, but on my series 1 S40 the key fob thingy does the remote locking and sets/unsets the alarm. The immobiliser is automatically set with the central locking. The actual key only does the central locking.
I had a few instances when I first got the car where I had locked the car with the remote and when I unlocked the car with the key in the door I set off the alarm. Volvo alarms are reassuringly loud! Duncan |

RE: Security
All x40s have coded keys.
The fob only does the alarm and central locking (with deadlocks if fitted). Of course the key only does the central locking when you open the car with it, but the fob has to be used to decactivate the alarm. The immobiliser will still be in operation (alarm or not) until the right key is inserted. The lower x40 models all came with an immobiliser but no alarm. Cheers, Dan. |
