Just cleared out the garage some more and found a king Tony socket set, don't even remember where they came from!!! I have a feeling my brother gave them to me about ten years ago... I'll see if they work as supports in the press 😁

Thanks David, slowly but surely, the ending is in sight now!

Haha, makes a lovely coffee cake.

Being round they should do the job Luke. I remember an experiment at school (many moons ago now) where we were given three strips of cardboard and told to design something to support a heavy weight with them.

I rolled each of mine into a fairly tight tube so i had three tubes that were 20-30mm wide (the width of the strips) and secured the ends with Sellotape wrapped round. Wooden platform on top that was part of the weight that had to be supported, job done!

Put another way, a tube of anything tends to be very strong end-to-end so should withstand the pressures of your press.

I thought there must be something around here I can use to push these bushes out... being a hoarder paid off once again, I found the metal half of a ball joint of some sort I pressed out of some suspension arms for my mate off his 1999 Alfa GTV. It was perfect for supporting the droplink and then a tube underneath so the press didn't bottom out and out they came.

I then left the replacement polybushes in boiling water for about ten minutes making them supple enough to push in by hand with a little help from a screwdriver.

Then I thought seeing as I've run out of chassis paint and stone chip now I will use some of this I had left over, it is like an amber waxoyl but it is brilliant stuff. I only had a tiny bit left, just enough to do the droplinks and washers, as they're brand new I want to try and preserve them a bit.

I also removed the propshaft as for some reason the bolts that connect the bearing carrier to the mounting plate were half undone (I have a feeling I started to undo them in the scrapyard before realising I was undoing the wrong bolts) so when I went to tighten them one snapped, rather than mess around I just fitted one of the other propshafts that I had lying around.

Torqued the front rubber doughnut bolts to spec of 80nm and the bearing support plate bolts to spec of 40nm. The rear prop bolts I couldn't get to with the torque wrench so I did them up FT with a pair of spanners and thread locked them.

It then moved under it's own power for the first time!

I forgot to take photos but I have changed the rear N/S flexi hose and rounded off bleed nipple then bled the caliper this evening before losing the light. Slipped when doing up the caliper bolts so now I have a fat lip after punching myself in the mouth!

More good progress except for the self-inflicted knuckle sandwich!

Both rear flexis fitted now

20210316_124758 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE

Replacement used caliper fitted, greased on contact points and bled.

20210316_124811 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE

I then bled the front O/S caliper so that's all the brakes bled.

20210316_125952 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE

I then fitted the polybushed droplinks, I decided not to use the washers that came with the droplinks as when tightened the polybush was spilling out over the edge so I used the original style washers instead.

20210316_140315 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE

I then gave it all a healthy spraying of the wax covering and made sure everything was torqued up and threadlocked the drop links.

Then I torqued the wheels to spec of 86Nm.

Thanks Tom, he is very happy with how things are progressing. He is coming to have a drive around the block soon just so he can see what it is like. He will have to be careful as the battery is hanging out as the tray has disintegrated!

I don't think he is on here.

I forgot to update this!

As the car had been parked in Wrexham for a year and on my driveway over Winter it was getting a tad damp and mouldy inside, when I pulled the seatbelt out there was an explosion of green mould spores, even the plastics were going mouldy... you can tell where people juices get the most on cars 🤢

So out came the chemicals (I should have taken a before photo)

IMG-20210317-WA0012 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE

Then when I shut the door I noticed the bodge glue holding the mirror in place was failing, so before the glass fell out and smashed I removed it, there were just two very dry crusty bits of silicone type glue holding it on at the edges and with a gentle tug it fell out.

20210317_115444 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE

I then got some white spirits on the paint on the gearstick and even that struggled to remove it!

IMG-20210317-WA0008 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE

I then gave the whole thing a hoover out and tidied up the boot

IMG-20210317-WA0006 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE

IMG-20210317-WA0004 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE

The catalytic converter got an extension so it would actually reach the the rest of the exhaust.

IMG-20210324-WA0025 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE

I then bolted the exhaust up, because every single bit of exhaust is aftermarket and all different brands the whole system lines up like junk and the cat to downpipe is no exception, I cannot for the life of me get it to seal (trying to do it on gravel on an axle stand) so it has an exhaust leak before the O2 sensor, which is allowing air in which I belive is causing it to run rich and hunt at idle. I will put some exhaust paste around the join and see if it cures that issue, FPR and ECT have passed their tests, waiting for the lambda to come on so I can read the codes.

The customer then came and drove it and was very impressed with how smooth it is, he said "I was expecting it to rattle and have a knock here and there but you wouldn't even know it has been converted" which for him is high praise as he doesn't give anything away. It also made very nice turbo noises as he drove past through the cone filter which is always a bonus

It has now gone to my dads house for the welding to be done, if you thought my phone camera was bad wait until you see the photos from my dads phone!

My mate did the transporting for me, if anyone needs transport work doing then get in touch with Joe, he also welds, services and restores Land Rovers.

So the worst offending item was the rear N/S jacking point which my Dad quite literally tore it off the car! So far he has fabricated a new one and cut the rot out of the sill ready to repair it all. You can see the pidgeon poo plate that someone had tried welding to rust!

IMG-20210330-WA0011 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE

Jacking point is almost finished, just needs a 14mm wide high tensile bolt welding through it.

So that's where it as at now.
