The sleeves are around £100 now. One thing to watch out for is the distance from the gearbox mounting face to the output shaft axis - the Iater boxes are approx 30mm shorter that earlier ones.

thanks for all that 440-turbo.
I'm hoping to have the box off this week, so I will have a look at the bits you pointed out and assess the damage. thanks again for the good advice.

got the thing off last night and it is shot to pieces, so it looks like a replacement is needed
the only numbers I found on the box are - 01023743 with a 3 below that, and then 010625.
so if anyone knows of a replacement box I would be grateful for any leads.

There is a part number on the top of the housing of the transfer box, I am not sure it would be visible whilst still fitted.

I can send pictures of the box I have for you to compare with yours, if that would help?

Hello

Yes - transfer box is £275 including delivery in UK

I would also budget for fresh oil and the collar from Volvo

I can send the collar with the transfer box, it is in good condition, but Volvo have updated it so worthwhile fitting the newest and best available as it is a job you only want to do once!

I would be very grateful for any help.

You're sure all the tyres are exactly the same diameter? Not different brands or wear rates front to rear?
This sounds very like there's a difference there somewhere which is causing stress in the angle gear.

If I'm right (and there's no guarantee I am) then it's a ticking bomb which could go off expensively at any time

Maybe they can be rebuilt by a specialist, frankly I don't know. Never heard of it being done though.....
