Default Yippee i think i found the problem

For the last few months I have been fighting with my XC90 following my replacing of lifters and followers and the turbo cartridge.

Faults began to appear mainly surrounding air flow resulting in the car being undrivable, despite replacing the Tmap, Exhaust gas temperature, fuel rail pressure and Maf sensors, buying VIDa and a Torque adapter.

It occured to me that the the turbo may be put together incorrectly, to test this theory I took the electrical connection off it and whilst the car was in limp mode it drove better.

Something that did not occur to me was that the turbo needed to be calibrated following replacing the cartridge, and whilst the supplier has this on his site now, I did not see it previously and certainly during our conversations it never arose.

In any case a Dublin based firm replaced the worm gear in the actuator and calibrated and flow tested the Turbo.

Put it back on and magic. car much better drove the s... out of her today and cleared the soot and it is back nearly to normal average 8.2l per 100km at about 100kms over country roads.

I still have a load of faults which I suspect arise from my hamfisted mechanicing...

so if anyone else is thinking of replacing the cartridge in their turbo GET IT CALIBRATED....

also if you are taking out the Turbo from a 185 xc90 do yourself a favour and cut a piece out of the metal bracket behind the oil cooler.....(about 40mm wide by 60mm front to back)

Thanks for all the suggestions for repairing my issues todate.

Tony.

I might need a powersteering pump. are they any good for those.

it was actually looking for a rebuild kit that lead me to their site originally...I think there is not much in rebuilding one. I might give it a go myself.

Tony.
Have a look at the thread I started on my Power Steering pump problems.

The genuine pump from Volvo is around €450 on an exchange basis. I think the recon unit from that crowd was under €200 but in hindsight, I might go genuine Volvo next time. (after having the system flushed and the fluid that comes out inspected)

If you're replacing a knackered pump it's worth fitting a magnefine filter in the return line, it removes the tiny bits of old pump floating in the oil, the new one (and the rack) will have some chance at lasting then.
