Update

Fitted the axle bolts yesterday - they came out with very little effort, suggesting that the stretch had become permanent and they had loosened off. Certainly torquing them up was at least double the effort of removing them.

While I was there, I found the source of two other clunks that had been annoying Wifey - one of the brake hose brackets had come adrift of the shock body and the guys that did the front springs just cable-tied it back on. I slotted the bracket and used a chunky jubilee clip. Also, the lower edge of the wheel arch liner had folded up onto the rear wishbone mount and was rattling at any speed above walking pace. A sharp knife fixed that one.

Just need an excuse to take it for a long drive now to see if the axle ping is sorted

Thanks for the help chaps - I’ll let you know the result when I know for sure…

Bad news...

Drive Wifey's XC60 for a long-ish trip on Friday evening and it still has axle-ping. It is nowhere near as bad as it used to be, which tells me that the new axle bolts have made a difference, but it certainly isn't fixed.

I'm guessing that the splines on the outer CV joint shaft, or in the hub have worn, which is still allowing some movement.

Hey-ho - it's only money.....

Just my two penneth.
My mate has a 64 plate "xc90"
It is I believe a slightly differing rear brake design to an XC60 but please correct me.
He had rear axle ping!
However the garage fixed it by freeing up the calipers etc and saying it was caused by the handbrake system, the pads catching.
Whether this was true of not I don't know but it did fix the ping issue! Regards
