As sort of stated on here before you look at a reasonably complex issue (triple carbs) make sure the car can run correctly.
Change the plugs, points, coil, HT leads, check the timing...if all of these are ok, then look at fuelling, put a fuel filter in line to see if the pump is doing its bit.....then look at the carbs!
Carbs need to be balanced for air and fuel.....also the seal onto the inlet manifold has to be good, if that lets in extra air, it will either run rough or cut out.
There will be a re-jet kit for them, if you are going to do this, do them one at a time......slowly and take lots of pictures!
Clean everything in site during the rebuild, dirty carbs are a nightmare!
Good luck.

Yes, that does look like a Penta set-up. If the timing is right and it ticks over smoothly, a total clean out of the carbs would be a good idea as a starting point. Check that the vac pipe from the carbs to the distributor is connected and in good condition. No leaks. All suggestions made already worth considering. Good luck with it.

Just a thought but a faulty condenser can give similar symptoms.

When I said advance I meant the bob weights in the distributor- are they freely moving? Almost certain to be an timing issue. If the car starts and idles then there's little wrong with the fuel/carbs/ignition.
