Default "Engine service required" a normal occurrence ?

I have been wondering, is it possible that if a considerable amount of time spent driving around like Miss Daisy is then followed by the need accelerate heavily could be responsible for triggering the above condition?

A lot of members seem to experience the above message and there appear to be many, many possible causes.

In my experience (V70 D5 163 bhp) this seems on occasion to be the case, with the accompanying limp mode which eventually clears (without an engine stop/restart).
Once the car has had a "lively" driving experience the message does not seem to appear again until after another long period of sedate driving.

I have a PPC code reader and there are never any relevant codes stored.

I mention the above because, genuine faults apart, I wonder if some members possibly worry un-neccessarily ?

What do other members think?

I have a strong belief the vnt turbo gets clogged with soot and begins to stick. A common problem with vw and Audi etc to with the vnt type turbos. City driving along with tesco fuel aid the problem. From experience, to avoid limp mode at 3k rpm in 3rd and above, is to fill with super derv once in a while combined with Italian driving the odd time. Motor way 70 mph in 3rd for half an hour on cruise is sufficient once a month to keep the vnt bug away.

Every diesel I've ever owned always gets the 'italian tune-up' method to blast all the soot away. (Similar to what carl said but more exciting).

When the engine is hot, just accellerate pretty damn hard a few times and you'll notice the amount of black smoke (in your mirror) reducing on each run. Thats cleaning all those places out!

Then no more oddness.

I can relate to the driving miss daisy comment , it probably fits the way I drive my V70 D5 most of the time and it does pay off financially whereas when I try driving a V70 T5 auto the same way it makes very little difference. I joined the forum about three years ago when I started having intermittant power loss problems and the 'urgent engine service' message , with hindsight worrying about the cause of it was a waste of time as I still have not found out despite having the driving equivalent of a hypochondriacs belief that they have every disease in the book . It dosnt make much sense but I have more confidence in the car now with 150k miles on the clock than I did when it had 90k miles .

Thanks for the replies everyone, and I take on board the potential faults that could be responsible. But the point I was trying to make to possibly allow myself and other members feel somewhat better was that, is there always a point to chasing the cause of the above fault? Particularly on older diesel cars that don't get thrashed that often (especially with the price of fuel now). In other words could it possibly be considered "normal" to get limp mode on the first occasion that the car is "driven spiritedly" after a long period of sedate driving?
Could it also be the case that with more people driving more carefully as a result of the price of fuel that this problem will in future be reported more frequently on the forum?
Let's all think positive for once! Instead of worrying about the next mega-bill on the horizon, HAPPY EASTER.

it's human nature that you want to find out what the fault is, the syndrome of let it develop is no longer there, before you did not have all these fancy modules and a message saying engine service required now you are told. i agree with you totally that we need to think more positive and let the car cure itself. also on the other hand how many people are mechanically minded and no where to start, when you look at some of the threads you have to ask yourself is this for REAL. there is a lot of information on this and other forums to some its a minefield like me with computers so we have to start somewhere if that means going back to basics then so be it. but on todays cars that is immposible without first having the faults read in the first place. as you say onwards and upwards and think positive.
and i can only do SMILEY'S for gawd sake
