240 GLT- wheel hop/grumble
Being new to 240 ownership, I have a lot of questions...
When I turn hard lock I get what I can only describe as what feels like wheel hop or like the tyre is being pushed or pulled over the ground sideways perpendicular to the wheel rim. Is this normal for 240s? They do seem to have a more extreme lock than cars I've owned before. I've had the tracking set today and it's still about the same. Also the left front feels very grumbly and lumpy on tight right turns but behaves normally on left turns. I suspect wheel bearings and have ordered a set but would welcome the collectives opinion. I have checked all the bushes and they seem pretty good. Many thanks. Liam Mc

This scrubbing is normal. Use the lock to your advantage but don't abuse it, bad for the tyres. Have the car rolling when you apply lots of lock. You'll adapt to it.

Mine does the scrubbing on full lock and is definitely exaggerated by the 17x8 wheels I have. But 240's do have epic amounts of lock for a standard car.
I'd check your wheel bearings for the grumbling noise, or it could be something like a naff quality tyre that just makes a lot of road noise.....most likely a wheel bearing though, |

That's really helpful guys. I ordered the bearing today and am picking up the new wheels and tyres tomorrow. I'll report back with the results. Cheers

The spectacular lock is down to Volvo using "negativer lenkroll radius" steering on the 200-series cars, "negativer lenkroll radius" being German for "negative offset" which was originally found on various VW front-drive cars. When applied to rear-while drive cars the effect was to reduce turning circles, albeit not to FX4 London taxi or Triumph Herald levels, but turning a 16' long car in 32' of road is quite impressive. Try doing that with a front-driver that's more than 12' long.

Well I have to say I over the moon, the new wheels (Scorpius) and tyre 195/65-14 have transformed the car. No more grumbles on right turns no more wheel scrub unless at the very extremes of lock. It was only a quick drive home from the garage, commute to work tomorrow will confirm.
Result......I hope
