Turbo questions
I've never owned a turbocharged car[still don't]so don't know the intricacies of them. The one I've been asked about is fitted to a 2.4 petrol engine and is the low pressure one. There is oil in the pipework such as the one that goes over the top of the engine, this I'm told is due to the turbo oil seals going/having gone.So the questions 1] do you just replace these seals? 2]replace the turbo entirely and if so is a second hand one worth the risk? 3] buy a new turbo core which presumably comes with new seals already fitted? 4] What do the different numbers[16T for example]mean and does it make a difference if you fit say a 16T to a turbo housing that has a different T number?

If it's got oil in there it's probably sucking it out of the engine and will fail in time,
Here's some pointers, Rev it to 3000 rpm, blip it actually, does it sound like a siren? Can you hear a metallic scraping noise? Look at the tailpipe, is there any white or blue smoke, you will see black soots with pre dpf cars circa 2009 and before If you observe any of these it's pretty well on it's way, having it re-furbed is an option but they won't know until they split it open, if you take the intake pipe off can you see scouring marks on the body casing near the blade wheel? If it's diesel when they let go they go into a runaway where the car runs on it's own oil until it runs out at max rpm then the lump goes bang and seizes, you can't save it as turning the key off doesn't stop it, iirc you somehow have to stall it to stop it. |

It's a petrol engine so no dpf. Car is a year 2000 C70[they've seen me working on my step daughters C70 and obviously decided I'm some kind of Volvo expert which I'm definitely not] I've not looked too closely at it at present but there are no untoward noises coming from the turbo and no smoke from the exhaust. Not noticed anything particularly different to step daughters car or my own n/a V70 as regards the exhaust tailpipe but then again not paid any great attention to that so will check that.
Thanks for the pointers any other thoughts/advice greatly welcomed. |

That's great if you have none of those things going on, As Clan says there is always some in there due to reasons stated but if it starts eating it it's time to say bye bye to it tbh, generally the first sign things aren't good is white smoke that stinks really acrid. |

I'll still have a closer look at it than I have so far. But from what's been aid it's sounding hopeful at least. Thanks chaps.

If you do open it up at the hose end don't play with the impeller as it's balanced and on a very thin shaft, just observe if there is any scouring marks on the inner casing and if it's heavily coked up, if you're not getting any of the things I listed happening I'd leave it be tbh.
