Default Popping noise help us please haha :)

Hi

New member here and hello from us both 👍🍻 we both really would love some help. I we have never had a turbo diesel before.

On Saturday we collected an xc90 R-Design on a 11 plate with 63k full service history at Volvo.

Upon spending some time familiarising myself with the car today further I took the filler cap off and heard THE popping noise . I’ve been on YouTube and forums all day trying to diagnose it and came across sirrobb. He explains it’s vacuum related which makes total sense. However if it’s engine mounts , vacuum pipes, or vacuum pump is this causing any damage to the car ? There seems to be slight crankcase pressure at the cap. It didn’t suck much revving but I’ve no real idea if that means much. I put a glove over the cap and it pointed up but didn’t swell up hard.

Could someone with a real clue advise us if we should be driving the car like this?

I want this to last us a long time for the children and ourselves on long trips away down south. The car feels perfect to drive, no fault lights or warnings clunks or bangs, Pulls well, “no messages” on the dtc hidden menu ending ... but yet Some dtcs stored but no warning lights on dash. But the ones that show as set are all interiors and door related. There is one set from ecm. Scanned with a scanner (expensive one like a bloody giant iPad from my mates garage)

Only showed a swirl flap log so cleared and waiting to see if it comes back as there is no warning light. Checking again Thursday.

So two questions really , do these dtcs store in the menu from some previous faults fixed if they are not cleared by the garage ?

And question re the popping. Placing my finger over the sensor tip on the airbox above the t piece didn’t make the noise stop: I don’t think it will be mounts as it looks too clean underneath really. But will learn more on a ramp Thursday.

So I’m left with checking vacuum pump brake booster assembly if it’s not mount related if I’m correct ?

We like cars as close to faultless as we can so this is going to bug the pair of until it’s all fixed.

All the best to everyone here.

You do not know what the previous garage did. Did they clear just one control unit, or all of them?

The right approach with an unknown history is to first record, then clear all error messages, go for a drive, rescan and see what comes up.

Anything present and problematic will reappear immediately.

You may also only have problems sometimes, so rescan after a week or two of normal driving and see what reappears.

Keep printouts (PDF or paper) in the meantime to compare then with now.

Until something has reappeared, don't worry.

Consider also finding a fellow forum member with VIDA in your area who is willing to help (in exchange for beer, wine, bitcoins...), as VIDA gives you a lot more information about your car and the current faults and recorded faults than any other scanner.

I also have a MY 2009 XC90 D5 diesel. I don't know what an "11 plate" is, it would help if you stated the model year (MY) of your car.

Sure

It’s a 2010 plate r design Volvo xc90 not a 2011 I keep forgetting as was looking at 2. Has a full Volvo service history and has had really good servicing every 8k done with none fishy looking invoices a whole stack of them. Good synth oil used and it’s in super clean condition inside and out hence some surprise at stored dtcs. Just annoying to see no messages on dash but have this in our heads something

Yes I heard this vida is the go to software We need. How much is this software ?

Previous garage who sold me it said there were no codes however found 1 myself tonight with my friend scanner. No idea what it was but it was gigantic haha like an old ipad but won’t be as in depth as vids after looking at it. As it reminds me of hondata in an okd civic type r turbo I used to run ten years back when I saw the data logging.

I appreciate the info and quick reply 😊

Take it to a spanner jockey that actually knows what theyre doing. Codes could be indicative, but from your description you still have a physical symptom that tha requires investigstion.

If you've not been made aware yet these are big, complex machines and need either specialist or dealer attention. Your average Fred in a Shed won't be up to the task.

If you have seen videos from SirRob you will have seen how knowledgeable and thorough he is.

His username on here is CheshireD5 and he is a well respected seller of Vida /Dice and often is able to sell a complete set up including Laptop. Speak to him for current prices and availability.https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=253190

I would PM him and see what he has. https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=99800

Vida will pay for itself many many times over once bought and will easily resell if you part with the Volvo in the future.👍

Many modern vehicles - including the Volvo XC90 - will log occasional error codes, but they may mean nothing at all.

Example:
If I start my car at -30°C, it may be a bit lumpy for a minute or so, and have unequal torque logged per cylinder, and may even log an injector fault or combustion fault, but none of that means there is a fault with the engine. It is just cold. Very cold.

So all fault codes need to be properly interpreted.
I can also log a injector problem in my XC90. Guess how often it reoccurs? Once in a year. That's one single fault logged, with static data, at some stage sometime somewhere in the last 12 months.
Completely insignificant.

If it starts to reoccur, and reoccur with any frequency where it becomes noticeable, then it is worth looking at closer.

This is why the car has to log a certain number of faults and reoccurrence of faults before it will decide that fault condition exists which is severe enough to cause the car to light up the check Engine Light.

So get a decent scanner, such as VIDA. And properly read and properly understand what you are reading.
