I did mine around 60k because that's what the gearbox manufacturer Aisin recommend.

I completed it myself, and I imported the stuff & fluid from FCP euro in the states. They offer excellent customer service and 'how to' videos. I used a thermometer in the gearbox fill port to gauge the 55c needed to then set the fill level. I would suggest 12 litres per change.. as you will need to flush several times and about 3.5-4 litres comes out each time.

Drives lovely when done. I asked the dealer to do a trans reset when it went in for normal service, and they kindly did.

This is the same advice I’ve given to the OP, but I suppose he could stretch that a bit if he wanted because his transmission is newer/requires the newer fluid. I wouldn’t do anymore than 50k without changing it personally, or 35k-40k if I was towing loads regularly.
Seeing that your car is a2007 on the older JWS spec stuff that seems sensible. I don’t actually know what fluid the OP will be running (either AW1 or perhaps a newer spec) so it’s likly he will get more out of it.

My fluid looked good after 70k (mine has no tow bar fitted) so that’s probably on its side.

well about £88 for 6 litres of fluid and 0.8 of an hour labour all + VAT . in a dealer (Operation number 43708)

Yes there is a volvo service interval contrary to popular belief on here , that is 36000 miles if the car is used for taxi or towing work or other harsh conditions .
For more normal use I would change the TF 80 SC Gearbox oil at the 54000 mile service or 72000 mile service where you will find the oil still has a tint of red colour . The later TF 80 SC gearbox is easier on it's oil . those are the prices I listed above . You need to know the filling method if you have the TF 80 SC gearbox .

Regarding oil , 6 litres ( 2x 1 litre , 1 x 4 litre ) = £ 88
8 litres ( 2 x 4 litres ) = £111 all + Vat

Spot on, that works out as the £200 I paid for the job on my XC90. A far cry from £500, which is what £400+ VAT works out as.

I used 8l when I did mine, this was admittedly sump dump. The oil at 68k was black but not burnt etc.

Have you ever changed the haldex fluid and filter? Mine is due for it now on a 2012z

If that's the original Haldex Clutch fluid on your 2012 it used to go like jelly on some cars back then and block the pump intake filter rather than the main filter above it . .. that would give a low pump pressure fault code . a flush out and clean would fix it , But if neglected it would ruin the pump .

My car has done 130k miles over 6 years. It has been to the main dealer for everything and has a full Volvo service history. To my knowledge it has never had the autobox fluid changed and still runs and changes as well as it ever has. It has only done maybe 100 miles of towing and that was just a light plastic boat....

Surely if the change was needed it would form part of the service schedule - like the cambelt?

Not really no, you don’t hear failures of the boxes below 150k. After 150 the valve blocks can gum up and fail.

Myself I would do it. But each to their own.

No its not part of the service schedule as it would double the cost of the service and that certainly would not be popular with lease companies and people on here ., Its an optional choice which the service adviser is supposed to discuss with you . As you have found out the gearbox works well to over 100,000 miles and still performs well . It would be a good idea to get your oil changed now whilst it is still working well , it is usually too late if you get to a stage when a fault develops and you expect an oil change to fix it .
It is also important to ensure the gearbox has the latest software if it hasn't seen a dealer service for years ... It is updated free on Volvo services ...

It wouldn’t really make sense for the service to include box changes as how many original owners keep the vehicle to move than 120k (well under 5% I should think?).

However at 70k mine was pretty filthy.
